Now, the issue is I'm REALLY bad at gardening, so ideally I want something that I literally have to do nothing to. Nothing.

Zephirine Drouhin is a lovely rose but will need treatments applied for mildew, black spot and rust.

Even a David Austin speaker advises against growing zepherine, tbh, I think in that respect its kind of reprehensible they sell it. Its a big seller because it has a pretty name I think. I think its the only rose I have ever given up on. Ever.

The problem is, no rose is so lovely it deserves to be a place where disease to infect your others can prosper.

    I need a climber don't I, rather than a rambler?

Broadly speaking you need a climber.

Roughly. But not full proof ly, climbers are likely to climb moderately not crazily ( ramblers can be thugs and cover huge trees in some cases) and be more likely to repeat rather than have a single flush ( which might also be described as summer flowering rather than repeat flowering)

Some people are tempted to get a big climber to get faster results but this ultimately means more work. Look at finished size. Plant one either side so you don't need something HUGE. ;). This makes life easier long term.

Madame Alfred carrier was in my 'wedding bouquet' ( grand word for bunch of roses picked that morning from the garden ) In our gardens she's always had thorns. I cannot tell you how many floaty clothes have been ripped on her because she's always by my mothers front door.

One of my favourites, planted near the front door rather than right next to it though. Not keen of shreading people or clothes.

I didn't realise it would be so hard! Golden Showers? Iceberg? It's to go next to Bruce my Forsythia.....am now wondering if a white rose would be better?

I don't think this will be a quick decision, somehow.

It shouldn't be quick! Each year these flowers will bring pleasure and you'll tend them a little. Each bloom should mean something.

RAS talks about MMe Alfred as one of their favourites , and I think of her as a sort of aunt figure commenting on the clothes I'd wear as a teen and young women that my parents weren't keen on and so slipping in and out of the house....and getting caught and scratched up. She came to my wedding because she WAS the disapproving aunt! and I like her for that!

Not everyone is so passionate of course, but you should feel real happy pines over their blooming, some investment.

It will be flowering at a different time to the forsythia so you'll be ok with colour. What colours are in the garden in late may, to July? :).

And a friend from this forum has a gorgeous small climber that is a miniture pot rose house plant type thing that has flourished in her garden. :). Gorgeous.

But choosing a rose to do a particular job has a place, because making a mistake costs money and time, Going for a rose that's not a modern English rose fwiw, is worth checking places other than the places I named to buy. There are real bargains to be had. But those sites are still the easiest and best places to search on line with uk climates I think. :)
