House buying: advice needed for conveyancing and surveyor servicess

Hi there,
We're first time buyers and are a bit lost with all the house buying process so we would extremely appreciate your advice on the above matters.
Would anybody recommend us any conveyancers/solicitors? We have already received some quotes from some of them and are a bit lost about the different searches. Are the drainage, enviromental and chancel repair searches necessary? Can we get this information by ourselves in a cheaper way? Shouldn't the Land registry fees be the same in all the quotes? We had one of the quotes with this fee being half the amount than the rest. The bankrupt search is done on each of the sellers or on us? ( the quotes gives an amount that is per person). If we don't need a mortgage, is this search necessary? The quotes that we're getting don't usually include an amount for Local Authority Search fee. How can we find out what is the value of this fee?
Since we're not getting a mortgage we are not sure about how to arrange a surveyor to inspect the property (I believe this is usually arranged by the mortgage lender, isn't it? Anybody would give us any recommendation for surveyors? Can the prices for surveyors services vary much between different surveyors?
