Scottish Provident

Anyone had any 'luck' recently with SP investment products, they had good performance some years ago (before the take-over by Abbey). I made some money on their global technology fund (and then lost it all). When I look at their current offerings 90% of them underperform the index, the only ones that don't are India, China and Far East funds.

I just put a number of examples into my software and found that they mostly mirrored the sector average with some being marginally better. Their far east funds virtually mirrored the sector average as well.

This suggests that you are not using the correct index against the correct funds. My guess is you are comparing the sectors against the FTSE and looking at short time scales in isolation. Especially as the Far east was outperforming the FTSE over the last few years but over the last 10 is much lower.

Excluding charges, the funds perform in a manner consistent with an average provider. They are not excellent, they are not poor. The focus with Scot Prov appears to be more offshore nowadays (and protection business) with Scot Mutual (the other Abbey company) concentrating on the onshore business. Going forward, it is expected that Abbey's new owners will merge the two companies but may retain different branding for certain classes of business (like Royal London have done). i.e. Scot Prov will be the brand for protection business and Scot Mutual will be the brand for investment business but they will all be out of the same office. Until it happens, we wont know for sure.
