Ipad 1?

Is it worth buying a first generation Ipad?
I would use it for browsing the internet, and downloading films to watch offline when travelling. Will it work for this, would the picture be ok or should I go for a second or third generation one?
I want to get a 64gb one ideally, but if I go for a 2 or 3 it will have to be a 32gb.

In a nutshell yes, it will work fine for basic functions you mentioned. It really all depends on if your getting the Ipad1 simply due to budget constraints.
There is a fair few tablets of the price range that are newer that aren't Apple products that can do more for your money.0 -
Avoid!! There is no IOS 6 update available for the ipad1. It can not support it and will render a large majority of apps useless. You will only be able to use apps running on IOS 5.1. My ipad1 was dreadful and always crashed. Save your money and buy an android tablet running on 4.4 kitkat. I have the samsung galaxy tab pro now and personally prefer it to an ipad. Much cheaper too.0

Seconding the Avoid. It's already lagging way behind. Newer apps won't even download to the original pad as they haven't updated them to the latest IOS.
I have had an Original since launch. while it's still OK on the coffee table for a quick surf, the later Android tablets are better for watching video on.
For your use, you would be better off getting a cheaper new Android tablet.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

Oh dear it looks like avoid is a good option, iPad 1 came out on 4 April 2010 , and there are people on here complaining about XP support ending after 12+ years.Seconding the Avoid. I was just chatting with a friend today who is looking to replace his iPad 1, since it's not supported under the current OS release and won't run many newer apps.
Of course, the tablet market is moving along at quite a pace, and the products are non-upgradeable in their very nature, so some features/capabilities will be added over time.
So, the obsolescence isn't entirely by design. (As opposed to on Macs, where Apple do deliberately obsolete their products even thought they are perfectly capable of running the latest OS.)0 -
I had an iPad 1, my Dad has an iPad 2 and I've now got an iPad 3.
Of the 3 the iPad 3 is by far the best, it has a better screen and faster processor.
The iPad 1 can't now be upgraded and the screen is poor compared to the iPad 3. The iPad 2 falls between the two, can still be upgraded but the screen isn't as good as the iPad 3.
Also the iPad 2, will be as out of date as the iPad 1 in a few months times.
So get the best you can afford.0 -
The iPad Mini with Retina is probably the best value for money iPad at present. Almost as fast as the Air but a good bit cheaper. Smaller screen but actually significantly bigger feeling that most Android 7" tablets as the iPads is almost 8" and is not such a widescreen form factor.
On the Android side you wouldn't be going wrong to select a Nexus 7, cheaper than an Apple product but still well built and runs the latest Android versions with plenty power.
As all the people above, avoid iPad 1.0 -
It is possible to get a number of newer apps onto an iPad 1 that claim to require iOS7. Instead of attempting to download it directly from the AppStore on the iPad, go to the AppStore in iTunes on your PC. Download it there and if available it will sync a compatible version to the iPad. I've been able to install Twitter and a few others this way.
The battery life on my 1 is pretty poor too now, lives on the sofa for ad-hoc surfing.0
