Should i change jobs?what would you do?

Hi, im looking for opinions on the position i am in. ive worked full time in a call centre for the past 5 years. the positives of the job are i work 4 days on and 4 days off which gives me enough free time to get over the 4 days that ive previously worked. the pay is 17k which means im able to save £400 per month. The negatives are i hate the job and hate talking to customers. i also hate the pressure of some of the targets such as never having more than 20 seconds between calls and the feeling that im constantly being listened to and being judged on what i say then getting marked down for things such as not using the customers first name.
every day i have to resist the urge to just quit and get something else. i have a fear of working 5 days a week again even though i know its still the same number of hours im currently doing. if i was to get another job it would, more than likely be, minimum wage but would hope that it would be something that doesnt make me so angry and irritated. i would love an admin job or something where i dont have to deal with customers. basically the question is: would you change your job for less money but more happiness or stay in a job you hate so that you can save and have a good work life balance??

Happiness over money any day of the week. You work in a cr*p job for cr*p money and are treated like dirt. It's not a difficult one to answer.Pants0

Good work life balance doesn't happen without money, sorry.
Jobs that don't have targets are downtrodden and no enders, speak to real grafters if you can yes the people that work in factories, building sites, cleaning up after people, those out in all weathers, the troppers with limbs missing and the like - you will become grateful, to them us sitting on our back side looks awfully nice, ask where you are now if you can do a day swap in another department? eg. Accounts, Mail room?0 -
I think you have to look at the positives in your job and list them against the negatives.
Tbh almost very job you find nowadays has performance targets, demands increased within shorter timescales and staff cuts.
Is the grass looking green, cos if you leave you might find it wasn't so bad after all.
Positives ...you have a job, you earn enough to save a considerable amount every month, you are indoors and safe, you don't have face to face customer service to deal with as it is phone based. A lot of people working in admin jobs need to deal with customers face to face too ie councils, housing offices and get a lot of hassle.
Admin jobs generally are sought after and competition is high, it may not be easy to just change but at the end of the day you've got to be happy in life so just do what you feel is best for you.
Good luck:beer:0 -

hi, the only other opportunities are for taking calls. i did put on my development plan a year ago that i wanted to take on a role that wasnt customer facing but there wasnt any progression on it ( they make us do "development" plans so that the managers are seen to be doing their job but nothing ever comes of it-waste of time). i appreciate that i can seem ungrateful and i know things could be worse but cant help how i feel. tbh i feel like its effecting my health. not to mention my view on people in general aswell :rotfl: ive read lots of self help books to try to change my attitude about the job etc but after 4 years of despising the job im looking for some encouragement to leave before i have responsibilities that make it too hard0 -
I did your job in my 20s and hated it too for the same reasons you stated. I couldn't wait to go and did as soon as I found another job.
I didn't 4 on and 4 off, but once did working 6 days one week and 2 the next. I loved that shift as you could always look forward to the next week, but in the end, I've always preferred working 5 days at a job I enjoyed than any flexible hours for a job I hated.
Can you imagine yourself doing this job for another 10 years +? If not, then start applying for other positions.0 -
Why not wait until you're offered another job and then choose between that and your current one? At present you're trying to choose between the known and the unknown.
Also, if you're able to save £400pm I assume you're still living with parents - if you were working for NMW, wouldn't that stop you from moving out in the future?0 -
I think you should look for a better job. Hopefully you can find one that makes you happy
You don't neccessarily have to take a pay cut; there are lots of office/admin type roles that will pay around £17k.
You say you've been saving money, so it's not ideal being unemployed, but at least you have a bit of a safety net!
I don't see why you can't get a better job, considering you have done well and been with a company for 5 years. It shows that you are reliable and hardworking, which is a positive for any employer :T
Don't undersell yourself! You are worth £17k or more to any company!0 -
