Supermarkets Vs Butchers

I was wondering if butchers are cheaper than supermarkets ?

Would a fair way to assess them to be comparing price per g/KG?

I'm trying to plan meals weekly and one of my biggest costs from Asda is meat.

I will normally grab meats from the 3 for £10 section.

Not in my experience, but I suppose it depends on the butcher. My local butcher is VERY expensive, but many people on here claim theirs almost gives meat away.

If you are only comparing price then yes. Many people claim butchers meat is better quality than supermarkets. But when you show them news articles about butchers selling goat labelled as lamb, or being fined for having rat droppings in the mince, they change it to "any good butcher".

The problem is..... you can't really tell a good butcher from a bad one from your side of the counter.

I'm sure many people will post telling you where it is cheaper.

Might be worth you listing what meat you buy, and also the shops you COULD buy it from.

The main meats I pick up are mince, chicken breasts and normally either turkey steaks or pork chops.

    .

By definition then yes the ONLY way to say if something is "cheaper" is to compare price per g/Kg.

If however the question you really meant to ask was if it was better value for money , then the answer will be different for everybody. The only way you can tell is to try your local butcher and supermarket and compare based on your own tastes and meat quality. You will then be able to tell if you think any differences in prices are justified.

Don't think the local butcher is going to beat the supermarkets, unfortunately.

And it's a shame because heir shop windows always look so lovely and the produce excellent. I think when it comes down to it, the lead factor when purchasing stuff is price, pure and simple.

If the butcher, fruiterer, bakers etc were cheaper we'd go there. But they're not, so we don't.

My local butcher is hands down cheaper than all of the major supermarkets.

I have a 6 page price list from him and its all per kilo so I sat and compared it to my usual shop and its £'s cheaper.

Personally, I don't see a lot of point buying cheaper meat if it turns out to be tough or poorly flavoured - which, in my experience, much supermarket meat is.

There are exceptions (Morrisons, Waitrose, M&S) but by and large beef and pork from the usual suspects is poor. I cant comment on lamb as I don't like sheep meat.

Price is important but it's easy to waste money on poor quality produce.

Local butcher shop here only has 3 star food hygiene rating. Not good enough. Where as the local Morrisons has 5 star.

My local butchers vary in price.
Some lines are cheaper, some will cost more.

There are two butchers on my high street, Let just say they do not price match each other as they never charge the same amount for a very similar looking product you can get across the road.
