Primroses and hyacinths
I've been trying to find a thread about primroses I'm sure is here but can't find it.
My primroses are still glorious* but what do I do with them once they stop flowering? I have them in hanging baskets and containers.
Can I push it and ask the same question about hyacinths?
I have a tiny garden to not a lot of room to plant out. Also gone a bit daft with seeds so hoping I'm going to have plenty of bedding plants this year.
*the ones that have not been eaten by sparrows! These ones have super healthy green leaves but sadly no petals... :rotfl:

My primroses out of the containers, I put in pots and leave them to a life of benign neglect in a hidden corner somewhere till I'm ready to replant next autumn. A bit of water when it's hot and they seem to survive.
Do you have room to do that? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Do you just transplant them into old plant pots? I could do that. When do you replant?
Thank you for the quick response.0 -
I've only tried it the once so far, on the basis that if I composted or killed them, I'd have to buy new next time round anyway so nothing to lose.
I put them in old plant pots in the shade (as I knew I'd forget to water them) and replanted them when I did my winter pots and baskets. Had a lovely display this spring so worth a try I think.
As far as bulbs go, I've not found it worthwhile to try to keep them going. I don't think I fertilise them well or often enough so by year 2 in pots half of them don't flower anyway. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Can't give you much advice about primroses as they grow like weeds in my lawn and flowerbeds - keep them damp and shady and water when droopy and don't bother with feed, maybe?
Hyacinths - they seem to flower year after year, unlike, for instance, tulips. Chop off the flower heads as soon as the flowers look shrivelled. Leave planted as long as possible so they build up food in the bulbs through their leaves - just dump the pots somewhere shady and water occasionally - not too much. It'll probably take 2 months or more for the leaves to die back. Then pull off the leaves and either dig up the bulbs to plant in the autumn or just leave in the pots to sprout again next winter (a bit of feed, or a top up of compost would probably be appreciated).0 -
With primroses, if they are large plants you can split them up and pot up individually as well to make more.0
