Aha, just looked on Lakeland's website, there are 3 there (magican, a zyliss one and an auto can opener) that say they leave the can with no sharp edges. I have a store local to me, so I might go in and choose one from there. They are not the cheapest shop in the world, but their customer services are fabulous and if they do leave sharp bits on the can I know I will be able to exchange it.

Some can openers cut down through the lid, which leaves a sharp edge around the lid, but this then fits inside the empty can.

Some others cut in around the top of the can, which leaves a sharp edge around the top of the can. This now only fits in the can if you squeeze it slightly oval.

Whichever way you remove the lid, you're going to have a sharp edge.

The first way seems far safer to me. When empty, the potentially dangerous lid can be dropped int the can.

However, the second way may be easier. The side is thinner than the top.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

My current can opener cuts round the lid and leaves a sharp edge on the lid as well as in the inside of the tin. I don't mind a sharp lid as I am going to bin the lid, I just need a nice smooth can with no sharp edges.

The magican leaves a sharp edge still.. says the person who has had several nasty cuts.. bloody tuna!!! There is no way I would let my children have a sharp metal can for anything..

My daughter made a pen holder at school with pringles tube.. it was cut at an angle and stuck to a rectangle base .. it looked most effective.

Heinz soup have a ring pull lid- no sharp edges from can opener, although loo rolls stuck together and at different heights used to be the blue Peter way of making stationary caddys

I mix of pringles tubes, loo rolls/kitchen rolls, other assorted tubes, you can get square ones which might be interesting too.. and make a variety of shapes and sizes.. you could also make your own from very think card then have wiggly shapes!!

Be careful with these I thought so too but ran my hand round the inside to clean and cut all along my hand.

    Some ideas in pinterest:

I'd be inclined to go with some paper mache to be sure or plaster - flour based to be money saving.

    Hi,

I know its not what you originally asked but toilet rolls of different heights taped onto a square of cardboard (cereal box etc) can be decorated by your little one and will sit on a desk/table.

Then when they are board of the design can be easily and cheaply made again :-)

    xx

A lot of the time I buy baked beans the cans have a ring pull. They don't leave any sharp edges. Might be a cheaper way to get cans than buying a new opener.

They've no sharp edges, but that doesn't mean the edges aren't sharp for some inquisitive hands .... although you could just gaffa tape up any edges if it were an issue. Depends on the tin/child.
