Should Ushers/Usherettes return to cinemas?

  • Our local cinema isn't too bad. I'm a big fan of horror films though and they seem to attract lots of teenagers who spend a lot of time on their phones!

I was also quite surprised when we went a few weeks ago to see a man smoking an e-cig in the seat in front of me. Surely when he was smoking normal fags he would have waited the 2-3 hours until the film finished to have a smoke so why he can't wait now I have no idea!

And not to 'big myself up' but I'm quite heavily pregnant and cannot last the whole film without a wee break so I have taken to always getting an aisle seat so I won't have to disrupt anyone during the film- it is also much easier to find your way back to your seat when it's in the aisle lol.

As someone already pointed out, food is perhaps the most critical revenue stream for cinemas as the operator only get a percentage of the ticket price. So without noisy popcorn there would likely be no cinemas.

I like to go regularly, but I always wait for the initial fuss to die down. I see most major releases, usually around 8-9pm and nearly always find just 1-3 other couples there.

Sadly increased staffing would likely just make the experience even more expensive. Maybe it's indicative of a general decline in standards of our society, is it really the cinemas fault or society itself.

Went to a smaller cinema yesterday in Edinburgh and it's probably been the worst experience yet. We had phones going off several times, text messages being received (put it on silent after the first one surely), noisy sweet wrappers, cans of juice being popped open, people chatting to each other and due to it being a small screen with only about 8 rows of comfy sofa's and chairs, someone got up half way through the film to leave and walked down the front rather than cut through the aisle but walked slowly past the front of the screen and didn't bother ducking down or hurrying. Totally ruined the film for me as there was literally something happening every few mins and I was close to just walking out.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I am such a grump, we went to the cinema at a both Christmas for the first tie. In ages. Tbh people eating doesn't bother me too much, so long as they are eating not throwing it around or eating in a revolting manner.

Once the film is showing the volume of it is so loud I find it painful. I'd rather watch a film at home, with our own ( better) snacks, the ability to snuggle up, not worry about the animals, pause for the loo of needed.

Going out was fun, I enjoyed it, but....staying him is cheaper, tastes better, more comfortable, less noisy and ......just better. Its a bit depressing this is the case though, really.
  • As far as I remember as I've not been for years due to this, the Vue was very bad on an evening. It was pointless going to see any flm there due to people on mobiles and talking. It was a complete and utter waste of money.
In my experience art house cinemas dont tend to have the same problems as your general chav or pig ignorant type doesnt tend to want to watch an art house film often with subtitles.

Its sad because it used to be a fun night out, now I never go to the cinema. I think teenagers go there to get away from their parents for a bit and to have a good natter. There is usually some horrible child kicking my seat too.

Its cheaper to BUY the film and then I can watch it in peace and quiet (and nip to the loo!).

Where on earth do you people live? Need to know so I can avoid them all in the future.

About once a month go to one of 4 cinemas in 4 different cities that are in the areas that we frequent. Can never recall anyone on their mobile during the film itself let alone making phone calls. Sure one or two people leave and come back either with more snacks or empty handed (so assume these used the facilities) but that seems reasonable enough to me.

Only in one film was there a group of young teens messing about during the trailers which annoyed the Mrs and was cause for concern but they settled down as soon as the film started.

Even seeing an afternoon weekend showing of Rio 2 that had a fairly high proportion of kids there werent any disruptions, maybe one or two more toilet visitors than normal but nothing that was an issue.

The only problem with other guests I had recently was watching a show at the O2 where there was a constant stream of people coming in and going out during the whole show. As what we were seeing was 99% visual entertainment they both were distracting and frequently blocked the view. Obviously the people are partially to blame but the venue is the key with that one as the other venues we've seen shows in simply "lock the doors" at the start and so there is no option to come in late or leave early or anything else.

The show themselves however were great about it and gave us free premium seats to their next show in a different venue that had the traditional locked door policy again.

I actually travel a fair distance to use a cine world cinema as you can get unlimited tickets, the nearest one to me is a vue. Can't say I've ever had a bad experience, even when I've gone to see a film that's been kid orientated.

I remember I took DD and her pal to see Paranorman, I actually fell asleep during the film and woke up with some witch thing on the screen screaming - I about had a heart attack, and my daughter told me I was "lame" for sleeping at the movies.

I was crackered though and had been on a nightshift.....then straight to college.....then cinema - Least I wasn't snoring :)
