Home based data entry work - scams or not?

Hi, I've been looking at ways of earning money flexibly at home so that I can be around as much as poss for my 2 young children. There are a lot of sites advertising earning money by entering data at home. Many require an upfront fee, which always sets alarm bells ringing! Does anyone have any experience of these sites - am I right to be suspicious of them? Are there any that are legit? How can I tell?

Any job offer which requires an upfront fee should be avoided.

I was looking into doing some of these too! im hoping there are some legit ones about!

they sound good, but the process of "Data Entry" or "Collecting /sending Envelopes" involves placing adds in papers enticing others to do the same thing as you ie placing ads - - this information of people's names and addresses goes into the originating company's database to be sold onto other companies.
