Apple restore to factory settings

I have an iPhone 3G and an iPod Nano that I would like to sell on eBay. I'm selling them as not working/for parts.
The Nano has a damaged screen (doesn't work at all) and currently won't switch on.
The iPhone won't restore, it says that an unknown error has occurred.
Obviously both have some details on including my Apple ID - am I best just not selling them if I can't restore them?
