ceramic frying pans any good?

Options
I am thinking of getting a ceramic pan to cut down on using oil when frying. Do they really work as per the adverts? Can you really fry an egg with no oil? (I am thinking the answer is no lol). And most importantly those that have brought one do you actually use it?

They are not cheap but I don't mind spending the money if they work. What brands do people own? I am wondering if this is one of those items where cheap is no good and I would have to buy a decent one.

Many Thanks

I saw some of these in a shop recently, and would have bought some saucepans there and then, but they didn't have the sizes I wanted.

Just as well, because when I got home, I googled them, and read a lot of damning reports. (Unfortunately, I can't find the links I was reading. It was about 6 weeks ago).
Anyway, it turns out that the brilliant non-stickability appears to wear off after a few uses, and the pan then either becomes less non-stick than an old Teflon type one, or else needs a huge amount of after-care.

(Please note, this isn't my personal experience, just what I read when I googled them).

Also, there is a question raised as to their long-term safety.

I have been completely put off buying them, at least until there have been more independent tests done on the long-term viability of them.

I would advise you to do a lot of research before going to the great expense of buying them.

    It's a real shame!

thanks pyxis, I had read some reviews on amazon about the non stick wearing off but though I would ask on here as I trust reviews from fellow MSEers more :)

Never heard anything about the safety of them  that is a bit worrying.

None stick materials such as teflon or ceramic have to be stuck to the metal. It's not only the none stick material that can be dangerous, the "glue" can also be dangerous if it comes off into your food.

Particles will come away, that is guaranteed.

All this stuff is a giant experiment on people's health. I would not trust any of it. The old ways are still the best..........and safest!

Get yourself an iron frying pan by DeBuyer such as the Mineral B Element, season it and it should last you a lifetime and not damage your health. If the seasoning comes away, it will be restored with use.

You do need some oil, coconut oil is very healthy. I love it with fried eggs.

I bought a greenpan, which is a ceramic coated frying pan. Works well and is tough, plus it claims to not use anything poisonous/polluting or that can break down under high temperatures.

Bought a ceramic frying pan from Tescos and the first time of use it was excellent.

After that, EVERYTHING sticks to it. Even if I use oil stuff sticks. Total waste of £20.

Isn't this a technological solution in search of a problem.

Plus the resources invested in making, shipping one of these things will never be outweighed by the notional amount of oil saved.

If you want to cut down oil, go for a spray bottle. I bought one of the proper spray oils (only because it was on offer!) and used to refill the bottle with regular oil, but it did clog after a while. I replaced it with a bog standard small spray bottle, which I top up with vegetable oil. Two spritzes of oil for a large frying pan are all that's needed, or even just one if I use the small pan I have for frying one egg.
