  • Hi Victor2

I haven't tried booting in safe mode yet - don't know how, but will try and do this.

Meanwhile I've tried copying another photo from the camera and this time it won't even let me copy. Here are the error codes:

"Error copying file or folder: A required privilege is not held by the client."

and, when copying to a different folder:

"Error copying file or folder: Access is denied."

No idea what is going on!!

Presumably you are using an administrator account.
It sounds like you've lost access rights to the disk. Can you create a file with some other software and save it to the drive you are copying your photos to?

To boot in safe mode, restart the computer and keep tapping the F8 key. An option screen should then appear before the Windows logo does - it's too late if you see that!

  • Hi Victor2

    Many thanks.

I tried just creating a text document in Libre Office and saving it to the same place. You are right, it comes up with:

"You don't have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission".

But then I don't understand why it allowed me to copy the photos there in the first place - and I'm sure this is something I have done before without these problems. When doing the copying it does flash up a box saying "you have to give administrator consent to do this" and I just click on "OK" and it copies them.

I have tried creating a new folder within my own folder and have copied a few pics across and it is now seeming to allow me to rotate.

So thank you, I think you have solved this.

Please do you/does anyone know how I can sort out this "administrator" and rights problem? This laptop came from an uncle who died and we inherited it. It is only used by me and I've just used it as it was when it came from my uncle, but from time to time get these sorts of "administrator" difficulties. I don't know how to overcome them.

The laptop has never asked for any passwords, I just switch it on and use it.

    See if this helps

    1. Click on the Start menu.
    2. Click on Computer.
    3. Right-click the drive that is giving you trouble.
    4. Select Properties.
    5. Click on the Security tab.
    6. Click on the Edit button where it says "To change permissions, click Edit."
    7. In the "Group or user names" box, click on the user that you want to edit. On my computer, I had to select "Users (computer-name\Users)" at the bottom of the list.
    8. In the "Permissions for Users" box, click on the check box to Allow Full control.
    9. Click ok.

It may popup boxes telling you that it can't change the permissions on certain files. Just click ok to move on.
  • Hi again,

For example, I have just tried to delete the folder which was not working (having copied out the photos). It comes up with:

"Folder access denied: You will need to provide administrator permission to delete this folder."

It gives the options "continue", "skip", "cancel". So I just always click on "continue" and it allows me to do what I wanted to do anyway.

This is what I can't understand, if there is some sort of over-arching "administrator" protection in place, it isn't working if I can just click "continue" to complete the action anyway.

I could understand it if it then said "put in your password" to continue, or something like that, but it doesn't.

    Mystifying!

Maybe something has messed up the account you are automatically logging in with.
If you click the Start button and type netplwiz into the "Search programs and files" box then press Enter, you'll see a list of the currently defined accounts and be able to see their rights. You could always create a new administrative account and see how that works, or even a standard user should be able to do what you are doing, you'd only need administrative rights to install software etc.

  • Hello victor2

    Many thanks for your reply.

I will try that, just to see what folders there are with what rights.

I have been merrily downloading software since I got the laptop so whatever it is does not seem to be preventing me from doing this. Just from time to time it will do something weird, as with the photos. That is what is so mystifying.

Anyway, I suppose I should not delve too deeply in case I cause myself more trouble - and just accept that I can only save things in one location!

Thank you for all your help and advice.

Right click on a photo and "Open with Windows Photo Viewer" as you may have a viewer slid in as default that doesn't allow manipulating pictures. Just a thought.

    From the opening post:

I am trying to rotate both in Windows Explorer and in Windows Photo Viewer - I get the same error message.
