My friends XP laptop will not connect to the internet when she uses it with a wireless router. It used to be ok but for some reason it will no longer connect. It works fine with the ethernet cable plugged in and connects to the wireless router ok but won't open a web page when wireless. she uses IE6 any ideas ?

When connected to the wireless, an icon for the connection should be in the 'network connections' . Right click it and 'properties' select tcp/ip line and click 'properties' Make sure that is set to 'automatically detect settings'
If that is the case and you don't have internet then run the network setup wizard and select 'connect to internet through a residential gateway'
save and check connection. You may have to disconnect and reconnect to the networkNudge nudge, Wink wink, Say No More!0 -
Clutching at straws - firewall settings??0

Is your internet explorer setting set to 'offline'? One thing I always find usefull is MSN Messenger's (Live messenger to be correct) 'Troubleshoot' page. It automatically runs through different things.
I dont see why you/she would have, but is there a static IP set up, using wrong values? Check by right clicking on the internet icon, going to properties, then double clicking on the TCP/IP part. If there are numbers in there, set them all to the option that does it automatically.0 -
Out of curiosity which ISP are they with?
Only asking as for the past week or 2 my Netgear router as been doing this.
When I log in to router it says I am connected to server, but it still will not load pages.
I have had to use my old asdl modem and this seems to be ok but means I can.t use the laptop via wireless.
I have had the router about 2 years without any problems.0 -
Well on my router sometimes the secuirty key resets itself... so i dont know and probably wont work but if you use a network wizard put the security to disable and apply. this is what i do then from there go into the router settings and enable security again. Might work.......
Also if not just reset the router.
Could be faulty cable aswel or network card aswel. Good luck0
