Mail redirection - debts/credit file

I'm not sure if this post belongs in here or somewhere else? So I apologise if it's in the wrong place.

Ok, so let me explain a little first: Myself, husband and 2 young children are in the process of being made homeless (this thursday 24th is eviction day) ..... Long story, but LL defaulted on his mortgage payments, so bank have taken the property back.

We both work and we are currently on a DMP trying to pay off our debts, this has meant that we have no savings for deposit etc and our credit rating is poor...Renting in the private sector has proved impossible for us, so we are now relying on our local council to help house us which we are finding devastating. We have been told we will be placed in a hostel or BnB...Fine, we understand that.

My question is......

As we have no address and need to get our mail redirected. I was going to get it redirected to my dads address, but am very concerned that the RM will pass on my dads address to credit referencing agencies - and in turn will affect my dad's credit file.

Will this be the case? Is it best to rent a mail box?

Thanks so much in advance,
Siobhan.

I think I've found the answer. I've read that credit referencing is done by name, not address so as I'm not financially linked to my dad or anyone else living at the address, it should not be a problem.

Can anyone confirm this for me?

Don't forget though, the Royal Mail postal redirection database is an Aladdin's cave for snoopers. I recall a while ago some government department bleating on about how they should have access to it (no doubt they now have). Best to avoid using it if you can. You'll have noticed the personal information detail you need to provide to sign up to it. Like I say - avoid if possible.

Sound like your best plan, you won't effect your dad's credit, good luck!

Are you staying in the local area?
Organise a free mail collect and you have no issues with your dads address or the cost of redirecting to you.

I doubt very much that government have access to it... I currently have a mail redirection in place from my permanent address to my work address in another city (a government department). Yesterday, I received letters from the DWP -- not at my work address, but a room nearby. The ONLY people who should know this address are my employer's payroll, who presumably passed it on to HMRC...

Anyway, the consequences of not getting important letters are likely to be far more serious than someone illegally finding you through the Royal Mail.

How far through the DMP are you, and are you doing it yourself or through a company/charity?

One option is to offer deposit, plus keep 2-3 months rent in advance, and see whether that will be possible (would be more possible with a private landlord than an agent, possibly cheaper too)

The other option is to accept the temporary accommodation, and hope the council can sort something (in our area, even with 500+ new properties in the last 12 months, there's still a list of 4000 people)

I'd recommend staying away from Royal Mail's redirection, and arranging to collect mail for reasons mentioned above.
