stopped mine by using a citrus based carpet refresher and adding just a touch of freshly squeezed orange juice to water in a spray bottle after just two days have no more carpet damage :j0

Thanks for the ideas, I now have a spray bottle of water which works when we're at home. I had bought a flat scratch mat but he's not really fussed about it. I have now bought a carpet tile from b and q for £4 and he loves it. If I catch him scratching elsewhere and squirt him he runs onto his tile to scratch!0

Interesting thread, also have a 'rescue cat' of almost nine. Has ignored the pad from the rescue (CP) Centre, the bigger one we bought there, and the scratching post from The Range!!
If she wants to scratch - it's either a bed, or the carpet. On the one hand, we only have one carpet - stairs & landing, on the other it was expensive (four figures), and it's heart breaking seeing the damage she's doing!!
I've tried the Feliway, which seems to help, but it just means she moves to a different area to scratch! Moreover, mischievously she'll to just to get attention.
I have got some pepper, which I was going to sprinkle over the area - did try that we a previous cat with some success - but I haven't tried it yet!
The 'citrus' option seems interesting, as long as it 'just' stops scratching - still needs to able to travel along the carpet i.e. up & down the stairs.
Squirting's all very well, but needs to be in range and sight when it's happening!I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard0 -
Fear of being beaten to death normally deters ours although to be honest I think Bodge went to try it on the sofa arm many years ago and he got such a fright he has never done it again but then he doesn't use the cat scratcher either but does use the tree in the back garden.
Charlie is obsessed with his cat scratcher, its lovely and tall so he can reach up high. We have just had new carpets on the stairs, landing and bedrooms and with the off cuts we re carpeted the base and top of his scratch post so it matches the carpet (its in the hallway by the stairs)
Fear of death ... that's my top tip!Ant. :cool:0
