Are you pulling our leg or are the ConDem's actually considering this ridculous change?0

They should be abolishing the RTB scheme altogether not making it even more generous :mad:0

I think the discount is rising, and the tenancy requirement period lowered, to 3 years (which now doesn't need to be continuous) and is being implemented this year, as it will be in the Queens Speech, in June.
The coalition want to make it easier to buy homes in areas where the cost would normally be prohibitive.
Hopefully, this time, they will replace the housing stock!

But would anyone want to purchase council property unless it is a freehold, certainly not a flat in one of their blocks of flats. Service charges are horrendous and are not carry out, if by change they do get done once every 5 years it is just a wipe over with a dirty mop despite charging residents thousand pa year for a service that they do not delivered for cleaning and caretaking. Since the first RTB property has gone up 500% since then. Major works are not monitor by contractors and they can literally charge what they like and do what they like and that is not much for the very large amounts of money they charge.
Also , who could even afford to purchase RTB in London today, with council fees plus their contractors fees as well. Also council rents are going up to 80% of the market value next year.

Oh, If only we had a government in power with the guts to admit that the RTB scheme has been a huge mistake from day one & that in future, all social housing will remain as social housing. But that rents will be a bit more realistic than they are now & bear at least some relation to a fair market rent.
Councils could consider offering tenants a small payment towards a deposit if they want to own their own home & to buy one on the open market, thus freeing up the present accommodation for another family. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Remember council charge for a lot of services that tenants do not received and that amount is charge separate to rents.Oh, If only we had a government in power with the guts to admit that the RTB scheme has been a huge mistake from day one & that in future, all social housing will remain as social housing. Rents going up to that amount people will not be able to afford to lived in their home that some older people (pensioners and disabled) are on fixed income and have lived in their homes all their lives will not be able to afford it, also bearing in mind that HB is capped therefore they will have to moved from their community that they lived in all their lives to an area where they know no one, most older people will probably die if they have that much upheaval and stress.
Councils used to pay under occupancy tenants to move and free up large properties but I am not sure if they still do that now but I expect so.. there is not enough affordable housing being built in the South East.Councils could consider offering tenants a small payment towards a deposit if they want to own their own home & to buy one on the open market, thus freeing up the present accommodation for another family.0 -

Many housing associations, in the South at least, offer tenants approx £20k if they wish to leave their home, and buy a place.
They also offer cash amounts if people wish to downsize., to a smaller property. (But, there is a big shortage of smaller houses anyway)
As for buying a council flat, well I wouldn't, but there are some really fairly grim ex council flats fetching silly amounts as private rentals now. - up to £400 per week in some parts! As they were cheap to begin with, for purchase, more than a few buyers have made a killing.
Many councils also rent them back, from the buyer, to use as temporary accommodation for anyone needing it.
I think RTB is a good idea, in part, but they need to realise the fire mistakes made in the 80's, and replace what is sold.
This housing shortage now is partly caused through very little sold off housing stock being replaced, in the last 35 years.
The government say they are going to do a load of house building, but it never seems to get going.
