The external device (e.g Sky+ unit) usually sends a switching voltage via SCART to switch over the TV set to the AV channel. This signal was probably stuck and thus you could not do anything with the TV control.

had this problem all night. pulling my hair out, sky wanted 70 quid call out, to probably tell me i needed a new box for another 100 pound. thought i would try mse first, found this thread and bobs your uncle, hard drive rebooted. Lost all the kids spongebobs but clouds and silver linings springs to mind !!!!!!!!!! thanks to all :beer:
