MacBook Pro - where to buy

Looking to buy a MacBook Pro 15". The list price from Apple is about £1699, same as John Lewis.

I was surprised to see on Amazon Marketplace loads of sellers offering this brand new for £300 less. I thought Apple didn't allow/like anyone to discount their products.

Does anyone have any thoughts/experience on this? Prefer to buy from JL whose backup is brilliant and offer 3 year guarantee, but £300 is a lot of money to save. Also I've not heard of a lot of these firms, how can they offer a new Apple product for so much less?

I would only buy from Apple - that way you are getting the latest model.


some firms sell them cheaper for the previous model.


Apple do offer discounts - Student and Apple EE Purchase Scheme - if you work for a large company that offer EE discounts - check the website for the apple, sometimes upto 17% off.

Be careful if buying from marketplaces. Some are USA models so the keyboard is different. Warranty is worldwide but may take longer for repairs. Fine if you don't mind this.

eBay have some good deals but only buy new ones from sellers with shops. Again, be weary that some are not UK models if the prices are low. Some only do cash on collection from their shops if you're comfortable with that.

Another vote for the Apple refurb store-I've never bought a Mac from anywhere else.

you will need a student card, or to order online from the university campus's network. If she's doing A-levels, try the student card from there. If not, your options will be to wait or ask a friend with a university card to go along with you and be the 'recipient' of a new laptop.

Be careful. The HE discount (university) gives you about 80% off 3 years' apple care. That's an astounding bargain: about £35 for three year's maintenance which is pretty much no questions asked. The FE discount (college, sixth form) doesn't, so is not as attractive. However, I _think_ you can buy the Apple Care at any point within the first twelve months, so you might (assuming the poster's daughter starts university next October) be able to buy the laptop now and the Apple Care later. Check.

What is the warranty period from John Lewis? Not so long ago JL were giving a 3 year warranty on their iPads compared to just 1 year from Apple. They were the same price as Apple but the extra 2 years was a definite plus. To get the extra warranty from Apple you'd have needed to buy their Applecare for £79.

I've had two substantial repairs done under Apple Care: a screen on an Air (which involves swapping the whole lid assembly) and both the disk drives in a Server-model Mac Mini (one failed, I substituted a USB drive, then the other failed, so I took it in with both gone). In both cases, I took it in one day and collected it the following day. I doubt that John Lewis hold stock and have trained staff in branch; they almost certainly send the machines away.

And Apple Care is nothing like £79 on laptops under the HE discount: the last Macbook Air I bought it cost £40, on a machine costing nearly a grand.
