Hotel Booking Site - Credit Card Charges

I am going to the states on holiday and want to book all my hotels before I go through Hotels.com and/or expedia. However, it looks like Hotels.com just send mt credit card details to the accomodation so I think I will be charged a transaction fee as though I was using the credit card abroad. Is this right? And does anyone know if there is a booking site I can use that will just deduct the money themselves so I won't have to pay a transaction fee? I know I should have a credit card that doesn't charge a fee and one of them is on it's way for the holiday, but I didn't think I would need it to book the accomodation from the UK.

I don't quite understand what this means, but what matters is in what currency the card is charged, not where it is charged.

That said, if the price is in foreign currency and when paying you are offered an option to pay in £ (Direct Currency Conversion), then most likely you will be charged much more for the conversion than your bank would have charged you.

Have you looked at booking direct with the hotels (sometimes cheapest) you would likely only pay the first night (in dollars) and then pay the balance on departure with the card you are waiting for
