Is she getting attendance allowance? That's what that money would be used for if they started charging. It's for money you spend because you can't do some things unaided.

Having said that, I was looking at the price of walking frames in the week (that's what happens when you're ambling slowly down a road trying to squeeze every last minute out of the time you've paid for parking) and they're not too badly priced.

Same here, I had two sets of grey crutches, and walking sticks after foot surgery and returned them all. Like you they seemed shocked, but it's not something you are going to keep "just in case you need them in the future" is it ?

Similar here, I was told the cost of refurbing, replacing worn items, steralising etc just outweighed the cost of buying new

No facts, just seems likely to me

The NHS wouldn't accept my mams crutches back after she used them, and they wouldn't accept the metal bard back that had been in my wrist splints for carpel tunnel syndrome.

The same happened to me, I took my crutches to the hospital and was told they could not take them back. I did not want to take them back home therefore I left them there anyway. Not sure what they did with them, probably throw them out.

There'll be an equipment store that deals with the issue and return of all this equipment; there's often a phone number on a sticker on the crutches/wheelchair etc and they come and collect it. I've had to do this a couple of times for people.

I think for nurses etc, it's just something extra to bother with and they don't have anywhere to stash it.

Many items lent out in this way are never returned. Perhaps a deposit scheme is the fairer way to go?

I was issued a pair of crutches two weeks ago ( Halton Hospital) and had to sign to say that the period of loan was for 6 weeks and the cost was £30.00, with a section for them to sign when I return them. As I've every intention of returning them anyway, I don't suppose I'll find out what would happen if I didn't.

If NHS refused, I would have taken to Oxfam or similar large charity which has connections helping in 3rd world
