Ebay help & advice

  • I just wonder if I have requested them to put my selling allowance up too quickly and this is the reason they hold back ?
I had allowance of 100, then 300, then 350 and then 450 which seems very small in my area of selling !
I need the listings to prove the sales if that makes sense :(

You need to remember that as you have a job, if you are claiming your tax allowance against that, all your eBay income is taxable

incorrect ....I can cook the view counter so there are 100+ unique views . it demotes the listing.

a listing with 150 views and 2 sale will appear higher than a listing with 1 sale and 1000 views.

    trust me lol
its also stated on one of the ebay pages that this is what happens.(don't ask me to find it)
I did say it was supposed to have changed, the new search system came in in the UK in February. I haven't noticed any of the changes that were due with it to have actually happened.

    Thank you for your reply
I just feel a bit...sort of deflated at the moment and I don't have enough experience at the moment
I feel a little frustrated I suppose as I have spent so much time preparing, registering and all the other legal type stuff so I didn't rush in and now I feel like I've been given 'targets' that are unrealistic. I didn't expect that after a few months of selling 70%-80% of stock per month (different stock though, I don't have any item that has never sold) that I would be told ''We'll increase your allowance at 90% sales'' and now all sales seem to have stopped dead. I have to sell a few more listings of the very few that I have got left but it doesn't work like that for what I sell
Say for example I sell 70 different items, but have them in 10 different colours etc. I feel like I have to guess what 'colour' people will want to buy this week instead of just having them all available as they all sell at different times etc.
I just find it really weird that since I've been given this 'target' for sales, my sales have slowed right down and on some days virtually stopped ?
I have seen sellers with thousands of items for sale and feel like I really have to perform exceptionally to ever get anywhere near this
My feedback is fantastic with a good sales record now so I can't understand why they would restrict sales of something that sells well ?
The last ebay person I spoke to from selling allowance team said my sell through rate is way way above what the average is but still Ive got to wait

If you have the same item in different colours are you using a multi-variation listing so that the buyer chooses which colour they want from the drop-down menu? That way all your items of various colours will be on one listing?

  • Hi
    Thanks for replies:)
Yes, I'm ok with all the tax stuff and legal stuff etc. as that is my area of work anyway. It's ebay itself that I feel like I don't know enough about to make it even more successful if that makes sense.
I guess I'll just keep going for a while to see if I am allowed more listings eventually.
We only decided to do it to get rid of the last bit of mortgage so we can retire as early as we wanted to and enjoy a bit more of life before we get too old !
I'll keep reading the boards and hopefully pick up lots of good advice etc. as I go along
    Thank you again

If you have a new seller restriction then all the items on the MVL count. So you could use up 100 of your restriction just by having 2 MVLs with 50 items on each.

  • Hi Soolin
Yes that's what I have found so at the moment I'm just rotating the stock I have and when each one sells putting something different on
(I've just convinced myself that at least it is kind of helping me identify the better sellers etc.)
I'll get there, but you all seem to know so much more about how ebay works but I guess that's many, many more years experience than I have at the moment
I really enjoy and want to do it, but some of the stuff on the ebay boards is quite negative towards ebay and also how malicious competitors/buyers etc. can trash your business in a heartbeat.......that kind of puts me off and I'm not naïve enough to believe all that I read and it is human nature for people not to mention the good parts I know, but it does seem like there are a lot of gripes about ebay and they seem to be growing. Although I read some from 1/2/3 years ago and they were the same issues ! (people seem to continue selling on there though don't they ??)

I'd say you could go back further than 3 years for most of them. Some sellers have been moaning about the same things for ten years and they carry on selling. Most people only go on boards to complain, people running successful businesses tend to just get on with it.

Thanks for that Soolin. I didn't realise that was the case for new sellers. When I opened my shop multi-variation listings didn't exist!

That's why I think we are finding it difficult to give the OP advice. Many of us have been on ebay for years and it has changed all the time, so we never had restrictions and can only advise on the information we have picked up by speaking to others.
