HSBC- useless arrogant wastes of *@\!!##

its my 21st birthday today and my parents were kind enough to give me some money, so off i trot down to my local branch to pay it in.

most in cash but also a cheque from one of my cousins

finished paying it in and thought, well now ill be less liberal with it when i go out tonight (nothing would disappear faster from my pocket than a LARGE amount of cash)

i thought ill withdraw a hundred and use that however after checking my account found it not to be there.

after a call to hsbc i was told that i should have been informed upon paying my money in that because it was on the same paying in slip as the cheque it wouldn't even be processed until tomorrow.

having not been told this in branch im sure you can all appreciate my horror in the realisation that i will not have my birthday money available on my actual 21st birthday.

im sorry for the rather long post im just absolutely disgusted as its essentially put a stop to any birthday celebration.

just needed to vent:o

I don't understand why you paid all the cash in if you were going to withdraw it???

why not keep the £100 in your pocket and just pay in what was left??

Many banks and building societies will take longer to credit your account if you are paying in both cheques and cash at the same time, rather than just cash alone (which might well appear immediately in your balance)

It will be listed in their terms and conditions.

For instance, the HSBC T&C include:
3.5 If items are paid into your account on a working day, we will normally deal with them that day, so long as we receive them before the cut-off time displayed in our branches. Items paid in later or on a non-working day, will be dealt with on the next working day. If you want to know when you will be able to withdraw items paid into Foreign Currency Current Accounts and our Foreign Currency Instant Access Savings Accounts you should ask us.

3.6 If you pay cash alone into your account over the counter at one of our branches, or we receive cash from you by personal delivery, we will normally deal with it that day. However, if you pay in a mixture of cash and cheques to your account on the same paying in slip, or if you pay in cash through a self service machine, clause 3.5 applies.
    Regards
    Sunil

i just wish i was informed. going into branch i was well before the cut off period and its very frustrating to know that one sentence could have stopped this.

he most likely didnt keep the £100 in his pocket as he would have spent it as he mentioned in his post, just put it down to experience

Regardless of what you were told on the telephone, I'm afraid that no bank/building society branch will ever tell you this as they don't know you are planning to take some money out (on the same day) and I don't think it makes any difference to how they calculate interest etc..

Not every bank does this as not every bank uses paying in slips - this must be a right pain
