AOL Spam email

Options
Hi
Over tha last couple of days our AOL account has been sending spam emails to our contacts. We have changed our password, run Avast and malware and crap cleaner but tonight we have again received numerous failure notifications where the have been sent again to our friends etc, any suggestions welcome

Thanks in advance:mad:

  • If you've changed your password to something nice and secure, are happy that you haven't got any nasties and there's no sign of anything in your "out" box then the address is probably being spoofed in which case all you can do is wait until it stops (usually within a few days).
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.

No sign of anything in the sent box so maybe it is a "spoof " hope it stops soon!
    Thanks

It appears to be only sending to those in our address book which would indicate a compromise rather than spoof?

it's not the individual account, it's done at server level...just got to not stress and put up with it :)

When this happened to me, AOL simply blocked my account.
I lost access to records of all my online purchases.
I lost my AOL contacts list.
I had to create a new AOL address and inform all I could remember.
Since then, all AOL mail is copied to my Outlook address.
I suggest you get a copy of your contacts and important emails in case you lose access to your AOL mail address.

The long-term answer to problems such as this is NOT to use popular services such as Hotmail, Yahoo!, Gmail, BTinternet, Sky, AOL, etc. They will always be prime targets for hackers.

Instead, get your own domain name and pay for for hosting that supports email. By doing this, you'll reduce the possibility of having your email account blocked or hacked to virtually zero.

Unfortunately, it looks like your email account is being spoofed. This means a spammer is sending out messages and entering your email address in the From: field. This makes it seem like the spam email is coming from you, even though it isn't coming from your account or from AOL servers. Email spoofing is a technique that spammers use to send spam without it seeming like the message was from them.
