OpenStreetMap wanted offline

I want to download sections of OpenStreetMap to my Galaxy Tab 3 7" Tablet, so that I can view the maps (AND zoom in/out) in offline mode, probably using a Map viewer like Locus Free.

OSM has good mapping of footpaths, so I would be using the maps whilst out and about in the country where wifi connection is not always available, particularly when abroad.

Does anyone know how this can be done (idiots guide please!!)
It has taken about 4,500,000,000 (4.5 billion) years for the Earth to form as it is now .........
and it'll only take about another 100 years for mankind to really **** it up!!!!

The NavFree android app uses OpenStreetMaps that download to the device. :)

Not tried this myself, but try follow this guide:

  • There is an app called OSMAnd in the Play store that does what you want.
The free version will let you download up to ten sets of tiles (1tile set = approx UK county).
If you want more just pay some cash to The developers.

I can second this - I took my android tablet on holiday with me last month, and used OSMAnd with the Italy map to navigate, at least on the train:

A 10" tablet's a bit cumbersome for walking about. The biggest limitation was the tablet's GPS receiver, which wasn't too hot (most of the time I used one of these, which is old-fashioned but locks into the GPS satellites quickly).

Sorry if I am hi-jacking this thread but I am looking for similar information for a Windows 8 phone (Nokia Lumia 720) before I go to Spain in a couple of weeks time.
