We got a petporte a few years ago because I wanted the cats in at night, but we sometimes go away for the evening or weekend and I wanted it to lock automatically whether we were in or not. The petporte has a light sensor so cats can't go out between dusk and dawn. (They can still get in).
I don't understand why there isn't a cheap timer catflap on the market. A mechanical timer like I have on our weekend feeder would work brilliantly and surely be relatively cheap? There must be a fair few owners who would prefer to keep their cats in at night. I believe there is a timer catflap out there now but it is still in the £60-70 range.
We bought a posh catflap 2 years ago, that cost loads, and the cats will come in from outside using it but won't go outside through it. We've ended up taping it open so that they don't wee on the carpet. Tried all we can to get them to use it but they won't. They use it when it's taped open.
I've purchased a Sureflap Microchip one. Can't wait for it to arrive now! My Bengal is sitting by the door crying to be let out every day now, so I'm feeling guiltier the longer it takes to arrive!
