For a more laid-back time, you might look at the Salento peninsula in Italy. Some lovely beaches, lots to see, great food & wine, various watersports available. Not the best place for clubbing, but bars and restaurants are open late, and (as is typical in Italy) entire families from young children to grandparents will be out and about until the early hours.
I love it there - think it's probably my favourite part of Italy.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -

Why not get a last minute cruise around the med.
Plenty to do onboard, Sunbath, restaurants, night life and a new city every day. Last minute deals can be from £499 with flights, all food etc.....
Monaco, Barcelona, Palma, Naples, Rome, Pisa is a common route. A great one too. Your boyfriend would love Monaco and Nou Camp!0 -
Hi OP,
What about the south of France on the Cote d'Azur, somewhere like Toulon, Frejus or Nice? You have the mediterranean weather, nice beaches (which are not quite as packed out with Brits and Germans as the Spanish playas are), plenty to do both activity-wise, sightseeing and lots of nice bars and restaurants. My fianc! is from this region of France and I just love it.
Good luck and bonne voyage!
TQ
Oh and by the way, Switzerland is stunningly beautiful and also stunningly expensive for a holiday (and anything else too really). I know this as I live there!Remember Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation is usually the right one.

Any info on budget etc and what it must include (everything / accommodation and flight etc etc. Might make it easier to suggest something.
How high / low are your standards. The lower you are prepared to go with your standard of accommodation the more expensive places you can afford to go to. I'm off to Norway this year but will mostly be camping as hotel and eating out prices are frightening. Are you looking at hotel of x number of stars, B and B, self catering, youth hostel, tent?
I loved going to Switzerland but prices are very expensive for hotels etc. I mostly stayed in youth hostels, mountain huts and bunk rooms.
What month are you thinking of going and what temperature do you think of as pleasant? I hate being too hot and my summer holidays in August are usually in the mountains where it is cooler or in cooler European countries. Puerto Del Carmen/Lanzarote, it's a huge resort split into two, the new town and old town.
Accomodation is more geared up towards apartments which gives you more living space with a seperate living area and bedroom as well as a kitchen area with a fridge etc. Expect to pay €150 to €400 for an apartment for the week depending on what you are after, can highly recommend the Plaza Azul which is well located and reasonably priced.
Huge choice of restaurants and bars but more geared towards couples. There is no 18-30 or the likes on the island so nightlife is more bar than club orientated. Expect to pay around €2 a draught lager and €4 or €5 a spirit with mixer. Be warned, spirits are large measures, probably more like a triple measure.
Plenty of excursions available but also plenty to do on your own. We enjoy a walk out to the airport at Arrecife (approx 6 miles each way) where you can get ridiculously close to the runway and watch the planes land over your head. There is also a nice walk along the coastal path to Puerto Calero, a bit shorter than the other walk and the option of a water taxi back after a few lunch time beers
Cooked breakfasts can be had for €2.50 upwards (with a drink), Lunches from €5 and a main course in the evening from €6 depending where you go.0 -
Been to a few of the above and agree there are some good ones mentioned. One place not mentioned so far that is in Europe (with cheap flights too) is Cyprus! It is a great place, it has all what you said you'd like and was looking for
" · Plenty to do in the daytime (boyfriend not a big sunbather like me) i.e watersports, boat trips, sightseeing
· Some kind of nightlife – i.e. cocktail bars, nice places to watch sunset etc (definitely not 18-30 style nightlife)
· Good restaurants nearby"
Would recommend Paphos (we like Peyia as well as that is a less discovered and maybe more romantic part) but that might not be ideal for your BF as far as the clubbing is concerned based on what you've said. Paphos would defo strike the right balance of what you and your BF would want. It also has a nice big shiny shopping mall (King's Avenue Mall) which has lots of eating places and even a cinema!
OH and I used a website called holiday lettings which we found easy to use once we realised a few things. Look for the properties whose owners have 100% response rate and ones that show all the prices for the full year as a lot of them had old prices up or prices just for one part of the year. Plus if they don't have 100% response rate we found they either didn't write back or wrote too late. Here's a link to a few pages of properties in Paphos http://www.holidaylettings.co.uk/paphos/orderby.price/ :T
