Important Paperwork

Firstly, sorry if this is the wrong place, couldn't find a general money board!!!!!!
I've been going through my filing, and have a ton more than I thought, so how long do you need to keep things for?
(eg I have ALL my mortgage paperwork, from EVERY lender!)
Have found this list,

but its from an American site, are the basics the same for us here? (Better still does anyone have a similar list I can print out so I always have it handy?)
thanks

For tax purposes, you need to go back 6 years only.No free lunch, and no free laptop

I work to the six year rule of thumb for paper copies but scan any older papers which I think might just come in handy at some time in the future.Forgotten but not gone.0

I would certainly agree with the scanning.
I used to hoard paperwork and had a very lucky experience with this. Several years ago I claimed compensation for a mis-sold pension switch. The form I received asked for salary, tax, etc info going back well over 10 years and through changes of employer, one of which no longer existed.
I think the hope was that I would give up and go away. However I could supply all the info and got a good compensation award very quickly afterwards.0
