Need something to "cool" my mattress

I don't even know if you can get such a thing.
Basically, we bought a new bed about six-eight weeks ago and have noticed now matter how thin our bedding is or how cool the bedroom is, the mattress feels like a furnace. Okay a bit over exageration but hopefully you get the picture.
Last night our windows were open, there was only a sheet on top and the bits of body on that side were fine but the bits next to the mattress were absolutely roasting.
I deliberately didn't buy a memory foam bed as I was told that these can be quite warm so went for the individual pockets sprung or something like that.
My OH works night shift so sleeps during the day and it doesn't matter whether there is one person or two people in the bed - it still gets really warm.
I know you can buy fleecy underlays to heat a cold bed but is there anything to do the opposite?

Please forgive me if this is insulting - my daughter had the same problem, and found that there was a hardly visible fine protective layer on the mattress, which peeled off.
The online shop she bought it from said it's a sophisticated version of a plastic layer, and that this bed was a big seller to hotels.0 -
Big fleecy underlay might do the trick too as it will stop the heat concentrating in the mattress directly under where you're lying.0

Haven't tried it but John Lewis sell 100% cotton quilted mattress covers - the salesperson told me they make the bed feel warm when you are cold and cool when you are warm. Don't know how true this is.0

Is it a memory foam mattress? We had one of these and had to return it to the shop as it was just like we were being griddled on a hotplate!!!
It reflected back every bit of body heat, and we became more and more uncomfortable. It was very comfy, for about two minutes, then it became unbearable.
Me and hubby were both the same, so it wasn't a hot flush type of a thing!:hello:  please play nicely children !0 -
ignore my previous comment, my speed reading is not as good as I thought, I never spotted the bit about it NOT being a memory foam mattress ... duhhh!:hello:  please play nicely children !0

What linen are you using? 100% cotton is best - polycotton tends to "heat up" as the polyester content tends to make you .... erm ... a bit sweaty
I would try a 100% cotton mattress topper with a 100% cotton sheet.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
Put some water in a "hot" water bottle and leave it in the freezer all day - cool! :cool:0

You can get pillow liners called Chillows (look on ebay or google it), they aren't cheap, but may help. I know that they are only pillow sized and not mattress sized but it's just a suggestion......0

Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions.
I have just ran up the stairs to check and there is definately no protective layer on the mattress but thanks for the suggestion.
I think the sheets are polyester cotton so I will try 100% cotton and I'll pop into John Lewis tomorrow and ask them about the mattress toppers and also the fleecy underblanket.
If I freeze the hot water bottle - will the condensation not make the bed all wet as it "defrosts"?
Hopefully one of these will work, if not I'll try the chillows. They sound quite good, but as you say they are quite expensive.0 -
I have been thinking about this - I'd go back to the shop you bought it from, and ask whether you have accidentally been sold a heat-retaining mattress.
It just doesn't happen normally - and I'm married to someone who somehow switches on his own heating system at night - we would definitely have noticed a 'hot' mattress.0
