Wedding breakfast menu options

Hi all you lovely ladies

Hope the wedding planning is going well! Just over 4 months to go for me and starting to get stressed out!!!

We need to decide our menu for the wedding breakfast however I have no idea what to go with!, me and my partner both love food and aren't fussy t I understand that not everyone is like this. For the non veggie option we decided on chicken terrine to start followed by a posh bangers and mash for mains but then my sister threw a spanner in the works by saying that we shouldn't have 2 'soft' courses if that makes sense?!

Looking at the options that the hotel option, none really tickle my pickle - he only options they had for the kiddies was tomato soup or a melon boat - kids + party dresses + tomato soup didn't strike me as a great idea and I didn't think they would be too bothered for melon.

My question is, what did you guys have or what are you planning? Think we're going to need to go off menu so need some ideas! I quite like the thought of breads with oils and hummus, maybe with an antipasti meat selection to start but some people aren't great with sharing so would need to see if the hotel could do a portion per person if we went for that. Or do you honk it's fine asking people to share?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated

Thanks

I found choosing the menu one of the hardest decisions! Me and h2b don't often agree on food when we're eating out so it was tough!

We've also got several coeliacs, nut allergy sufferers and veggies coming so needed to cater for all of them!

We've gone for a ham hock terrine or open filo pastry mushroom lasagne to start. I liked both of them at the tasting, h2b doesn't eat mushrooms but he's happy with the terrine!

Then we were really stuck on the main. We tasted both a duck confit and a pork belly - both served with dauphinoise potatoes and they were both delicious. However both are quite fatty meats and we weren't sure if having two quite rich options was a good idea! We both liked the duck so settled on that. But we later decided to stick a safe option of a turkey roast dinner in. Mainly for the fact that my nan pretty much only eats plain meat and roast potatoes! We've then either chocolate fondant or vanilla pannacotta for dessert.

We haven't chosen the children's menu yet. It will likely be melon for starter though! I loved melon as a kid and thought it better than soup! There was also fruit juice as a kids starter but wasn't sure if the kids would think it wasn't actually food and get confused!

I think your menu sounds great. I wouldn't have even considered the fact that they were soft! The terrine will be with some kind of toast I assume?

The sharing thing could work but might be awkward if people don't know each other on a table?

We had pate to start, with roast lamb followed by sticky toffee pudding. We had one gluten & wheat free guest who arranged her meal direct with the chef, and a couple of veggies who had vegetable terrine & then roasted vegetable tarts.

When faced with the long list of choices, we whittled it down to 2 on each course (mainly by saying things like: don't fancy xxx or you don't eat xxx) and then had a tasting meal which made the final decision.

BTW, don't forget it is YOUR wedding, if you want to give your guests terrine and bangers & mash, then do so. The only people who should have any say are those who are paying the bill ;) (and I bet your sister isn't chipping in!)

Luckily we had no dietary requirements for any of our guests so we chose, Vegetable soup for starters, Roast lamb for mains and sticky toffee pudding for dessert.

We found the food really difficult. There are some really yummy things on the menu (duck, belly pork) but realistically, most of our guests won't like them. So we've gone for the more 'boring' option.

    Starter: Ham hock terrine
    Main: Chicken coq au vin
    Desert: White chocolate cheesecake

We also have a range of dietary requirements (ceoliac, vegetarian, vegan and lactose intolerant) so they are getting a tailored menu.

We were lucky we had three choices out of seven dishes for each course then people just picked what they wanted from the three choices it made it so much easier.

Starters we had mushroom and tarragon soup , smoke salmon with a mango salsa and a goats cheese and 3 bean salad

Mains were lamb or beef and then a mushroom and leek strudel

Desserts were Scottish berry pudding, chocolate cake and cheese with oat cakes

The caterers let people have a mix of meats if the wanted

The only 2 dietary requirements we had was a ceoliac and my brother who is a vegan and they did him a wonderful vegan meal.

Agree with what others have said go with the choices you want not what others tell you to have

We are lucky and are working with a FAB caterer after our disappointment with the venue going into liquidation over Christmas. He has actually been even nicer because of our obvious stress when we met up with him and is throwing in tea and coffees for free as well as our kids 3 course meals (there are less than 10 kids going..)

    We are offering:

Starter - potted beef or trio of melon (obviously this all sounds better in 'chef' talk)

Main - honey glazed gammon or pan fried chicken (both options with roast potatoes and veg)

Pudding - (eat, share or barter) trio of lemon cheesecake, strawberry eton mess and chocolate fudge cake

We thought that are fairly safe but scrummy choices and the trio of puddings spread across a good variety of 'types' of pudding should mean nobody dislikes everything they are given. We have asked for dietary information to pass along so that those can be dealt with on an individual basis but I don't think we have any...

The kids are having crispy potato wedges with dipping sauces, mini roast dinner then a choice of icecream or cupcake.

Not original advice but go for what YOU want to eat - all the way through I was considering that though I am not a fussy eater at all, my other half is and its our wedding so why would I cater for others?!

Why do the children have to have a different meal to the adults, that seems odd.

I don't think the starter and main are too similar, but they are both quite heavy, it might be better to have one fish and one meat if that is an option. It might be easier to think about the season as well, you are having a summer meal so you don't want anything too heavy.

I went to a colleagues wedding fairly recently and for starter they had chicken parfait for starter with salad and bread, the main was roast pork and the pudding was apple pie, it was very nice but they were so heavy that most people couldn't eat it.

This! It's YOUR day. YOU enjoy it. :)
  • Personally I would stick to things quite plain. I know it seems boring but it probably suits more tastes than something a little more specialised. I'm hoping that when I finally get married we can find a travelling carvery or somewhere that does one already as we know soooooooo many fussy eaters and I absolutely hate food waste. I'd look at typical pub/restaurant starters and puds as many people feel safe with what they know. :) It is your day at the end of it but it would be an awful shame to spend money on something people leave on their plates.

I had this problem as some said one of my starters wouldn't be liked and it played in my mind. Mine was rosemary and garlic encrusted Brie with Cumberland sauce or per and ham soup for starters. Cavery for main choice of beef and turkey. Or artichoke and goats cheese open fill pastry with salad. Then Yorkshire ours and vegs roasties for mains. Choclate torte with raspberry coulis or apple pies with mandarin syrup and chantilly creM. They were all liked in he end. Kids had choice of half our main course or five of six starters mains pure from. Kids bar meal. Some that had ordered main has cavery in the end but here was plenty; Go with what you would like and ignore everyone else. It's your day
