Best car scrapping deal?

Have decided to scrap old and un-driveable-without-a great-deal-of work Fiat Punto x-reg, which has sat on driveway for 2 years.

I'm gearing myself up to call around local scrappies to find best deal to take it away. What's the best deal to scrap elderly cars these days? (bearing in mind, I know it's worth next to nowt anyway) :)

We towed a Mondeo to a scrapyard last Monday and got £140 for it.

  • I put a 04 plate megane that wasn't driving on ebay for spares starting at 99p and got close £600 for it cash when they picked it up and towed it away.

Another vote for car take back who get prices from scrappies near you and you pick the best one. WE had prices that varied by 2/3 and got the best deal.

Push it to the front of the drive and stick a sign in the windscreen saying "Spares of Repair - £250". Take whatever someone offers you and make sure they fill the v5 in and give it back to you (or at least the yellow slip if a trader).
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

  • Cartakeback would only give me £75 for a knackered Pug 206 and the same for a 11 year old Punto which I also put in to test. I sold the Pug for £250 buy-it-now on eBay.

    Many thanks for all replies.

I'll have a look at the cartakeback site, which sounds useful. If I can persuade someone to help me tow it to the breakers, I presume i'd get a better deal than if they collect?

I like the idea of selling/recycling for spares but honestly, this thing is as rusty as hell and has mould growing on it, and ebay must be flooded with old puntos and their parts! I'm sorely tempted to try Scivenov's idea first though, if I can get it shunted to the end of the drive

If you are considering towing your car needs to be insured unless its on a flatbed

Scrapped a Mondeo diesel a couple of week back and got offered £150, as we were towing it to them we got stopped by a couple of lads going to work at another breakers who gave us £200 and took it off our hands.A petrol mondeo has dropped in price to around £100 but a diesel is worth £200 because the cat alone nets them £100 back.
