data protection at hilton

Hi I booked a wedding through groupon for the hilton hotel. We went to see our wedding planner and whilst there we noticed someone my partner knew. Who was behind the reception desk. We booked our date and only told our parents as we did not want bother from ex's. Within a week the date was out for all to know.. Subsequently we have had grief from certain people and have cancelled the wedding. Ive spoken to groupon and the hilton who have both said its down to yhe other person. I was very surprised at the attitude the hilton have taken and told me its hear say and there is no way im getting a refund, but I could sell it on! Like im not stressed enough! Am I to just lose a thousand pounds which is alot of money to me and to
Lose it to a multibillion corporate. Can anyone give me some advice or a contact who will help.

    Whos the hotel marrying?

More seriously, is it the wedding you are having there or just the reception after?

A wedding legally has to be public information, as per https://www.gov.uk/marriages-civil-partnerships/giving-notice-at-your-local-register-office when you give your notice of where and when it will be it is publicly displayed exactly so that ex's and others who may have objects can go. It is likewise why the ceremony part must be done in a place open to the public and why you cant do it in your own home etc.

So you booked your wedding and because some people are aware of this you are trying to cancel it? That seems like a bit of an over-reaction. If you are so concerned about one of your exes finding out about it, why on earth did you book it at that hotel once you know they worked there?

Who's to say it wasn't someone stood in reception that was nothing to do with the Hilton Group who saw you and overheard your conversation?

Sorry, but these things happen. If you didn't want anyone else to know then don't do it in a hotel in the same country you live in...
