Can anyone suggest a tree or plant of any sort that would be suitable to give us some privacy in the summer months?

If it's only needed for a few months over the summer, have you thought about a garden sail?

I have grown artichokes for food and been impressed with how fast and tall they grow - effectively a six foot hedge by mid-summer. This year I have planted extra into pots, which I will place for privacy, when tall enough.
In terms of money saving - they can be bought very cheaply at the green grocers. £10 worth should make a forest. Plant most as complete tubers- (or super-moneysavers can cut off tops and bottoms for planting and cook the rest).
Enjoy leafy privacy all summer. Keep the stalks until December (still gives some privacy), then dig up and make soup (Beware side-effects  )
No need to buy more next year. You're bound to miss loads in the ground )

I've put willow cuttings into a tub of compost and they're rooted and are growing already. (I would reckon they were planted at the end of February)
I'm planning on moving them around to provide a screen when and where needed. (Have a neighbour who always seems to find a gap in my borders!) Hopefully I'll be able to trim or dispense with them as required. (I've also got bamboo in tubs but keep checking for roots emerging from the bases and keep them on hard ground/ moving!)
Great idea with the artichokes :)

Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

What does "pleaching" mean please? Am wondering whether "pleached" pear trees might be useful for me..
