Collection only item - buyer pays on PayPal but doesn't collect?

Hi,

Just wondering if someone could help pls.

I sold a "collection only" item recently. Sent several messages to person asking them to arrange time for collection. I received no response.

So I sent a message to them saying I assumed they had changed their mind and issued a "non paying bidder" case so I could get fee refund and relist.

Buyer has now paid on PayPal but still hasn't got in touch to arrange collection.

What should I do?

Phone them, get them to commit to a time and date for collection. If not then all you can do is refund and move on. If they won't collect you can't keep the money, and unless you refund within a certain period, I think it is 60 days then you still pay the paypal fees and have to refund as a seperate payment which is not safe for you.

This is one of the issues with collection only items, and I *will* get round to doing a sticky thread on the known issues.

  • Many thanks Soolin for your helpful reply, will follow your advice. I have tried several times to arrange pick-up, with appointments being made and not kept. It's just so annoying when buyer's do this - I just don't know why people have to waste your time by bidding if they have no intention of buying. If I refund can I re-open a case against them as I would like to see them get a black mark for this - if nothing else so that it hinders their ability to bid on items where sellers don't accept buyers with this type of history.

You can't open an NPB on them as you said in your first post that they had paid via PayPal.

  • Hi,

Yes, sorry they have paid via PayPal but this was a collection only and payment in cash on collection item (on all collection items I only allow cash payments).

They haven't arranged collection, despite several requests from me.

Then they paid on PayPal but still haven't made any contact re collection.

So I'd like to refund their PayPal and open a non-paying bidder action again so that they get a strike against their account for non paying AND I am refunded my fees by ebay.

Otherwise I can't recover my listing fees and as you said I can't keep their money if they don't collect. It is ridiculous that sellers should have so much hassle and lose fees in circumstances like this when they are not at fault.

So pls do you know can I refund their payment and then lodge the NPB so I get my fees back from ebay and can list the item again.

Of course you can't. They have paid, why should you be able to open a NPB case??

You can ask for what payment you want, it is immaterial. Paypal will show as the preferred /default option and buyer is perfectly able to use it.

All you can do is phone buyer and tell them you are refunding and will they agree to a mutual cancellation or are the planning to pay cash and collect

  • Thanks for the replies.

I've already tried several times with this buyer and it is clear they are messing around.

So what I want to do is refund their payment, sending them a message again that they need to collect and pay cash. I don't have a phone number and wouldn't want to phone them anyway.

If they still ignore once I've refunded I want to be able to open a NPB again, the aim being that they get a NPB against their record.

So once I've refunded can I start a NPB or will the system prevent me from doing so?

How else can I get my commission back from ebay?
  • Another thought, can I refund and then do a revised invoice adding the cost for p&p? The cost of posting this will be high as it's big and heavy and given the messing around I'll only send it by special delivery. Is this an option?

The system might not prevent you but you will be in breach and if buyer complains you get a warning. I have already explained that your only option now is to try a mutual

You cannot add postage if the original auction did not show it. Anyway, you still couldn't force them to pay.

I would still strongly urge you to phone them, use the advanced system to get their details.

I have started a sticky now re collection only items.
