Black Screen On Set Up

I booted up my desktop as usual this morning. Everything fine for first hour, then my pc completely froze and was unresponsive. I held down the start button on the front of the machine for 6 seconds and it shut down.
When I have come to boot up again, it goes fine until the "welcome" screen at which it pauses for 15 seconds then just goes black/blank apart from the mouse cursor.
This time I have booted up in safe mode to allow me access to post on here.
Any ideas of what to do?
I should add it runs on XP.

In safe mode with networking, I have noticed there is no sound for say youtube or winamp.0 -
You should run ChkDsk from Safe Mode with Command Prompt. But ultimately you should back up your data in readiness for a Factory Restore/Clean Install.0
