Black Screen On Set Up

I booted up my desktop as usual this morning. Everything fine for first hour, then my pc completely froze and was unresponsive. I held down the start button on the front of the machine for 6 seconds and it shut down.

When I have come to boot up again, it goes fine until the "welcome" screen at which it pauses for 15 seconds then just goes black/blank apart from the mouse cursor.

This time I have booted up in safe mode to allow me access to post on here.

Any ideas of what to do?

I should add it runs on XP.

In safe mode with networking, I have noticed there is no sound for say youtube or winamp.

You should run ChkDsk from Safe Mode with Command Prompt. But ultimately you should back up your data in readiness for a Factory Restore/Clean Install.

all sorted now. did a google as short of time. my computer, c drive, right click properties, tools and error checking. ticked boxes and restarted as per normal. took an hour but seems fine now thankfully.

eek unless I do this every time I boot the dreaded black screen returns.

Is there another way to get rid of it for good?

Replace the CMOS battery perhaps. Open up the case, after powering down and unplugging the system. Remove RAM and Graphics card, clean the contacts with an eraser and replace.
