Hi all,
In the process of buying a house. Something me and the missus love. Its a great space.
Drove by the house today just by chance and noticed a couple of young guys on a horse/cart type thing.
Did a little more research with some choice words on Google. It turns out there is a council owned/run traveller caravan site up the road from the house. It's a little hidden away due to tree's etc, hence we didnt spot it at first.
would this put anyone off purchase? We're planning to go and speak to neighbours and ask of thier experiences. See who they are and if they have had any issues. Obviously hoping for a number of people who have lived there for a long time etc.
If anyone has any experiences to share then let me know.
thank you in advance!

Good idea to speak to the neighbours when you are buying a house for many reasons, even if it's just to find out what the neighbours are like.
I have had contact with many travellers and, like all people, there are people who you want for neighbours and others that you wouldn't!
We have many traveller sites near to us and the majority are lovely people just choosing a different way of life.
However, there are also two 'rival' groups who live in sites opposite each other and seem to be permanently at 'odds' with each other. This, unfortunately has spilled over to the nearest town and both sets have been banned from the pub!
So, might be worth popping into the local for a drink and a chat (if that would be part of your life style.)0 -

Hmm, it may not put me off but I would be worried it would put future buyers off.
I would also be worried that the size of the site may increase. Many traveller sites start off small and grow, look at Dale Farm.
I would search the local paper for any signs of problems and perhaps walk onto the site and see how you feel.
It have worked with traveller families and never received anything but kindness and respect and never felt intimidated but do know that in the area I work I would go alone but the police would only go there with multiple police cars. Not sure what that says!0 -
As with any purchase, talk to the neighbours. The postman. The publican. the cornershop owner. The local school (headteacher/secretary/whoever).
and in this case, the site residents.
Search the local paper back-copies for any issues - not just the camp site, but local flooding problems, drug issues, whatever.0 -

They could be the nicest people in the world but resale will be an issue.
Is this house already good value for what you're getting or is it market rate?
We're getting it at a decent price (I think), especially considering the area in general. The vendor is after a quick sale after having someone already pull out (after offering well above asking). She is wanting to move into a new property with her elderly father.
On poster's advice we went and spoke to some neighbours yesterday and in the local pub too.
All mentioned that they had not previously had any problems with the site (one neighbour is retired and been at his property for 15 years). Another neighbour has been there for 6 years and has no plans of moving - he's actually planning an extension.
We even went to a nearby park and spoke to a couple walking a dog. They mentioned they didn't even realise the site was there until they moved, but it hasn't bothered them and they're happy with the area.
The area is along the proposed cross rail route and so I would hope the prices will head in an upwards direction.0
