please help me !! with npower bill !!

I am an NPOWER duel fuel customer of 15yrs ! I was incorrectly billed last year . when they were changing over there billing system ! which was their fault !! to the tune of £1100. I have been paying this off at £148 per month . but on top of that I have had my winter bills charges!! I currently owe all together now after paying large chunks off all my bills off £840. I haven't refused to pay anything . but today I have received a letter saying I have to pay this all within 7days ! ! I have been in tears as I have just rang them and offered to pay half of it . as I received my wages today , but they have refused this ! I cant pay the full amount altogether . the thing is ive not refused to pay !! just cant pay it all !! they said that I cant use last years excuse to them now , As its this years bills ! I need to pay ! but I would not be in this mess ? if they didn't mess up my account last year !! please help ! ive only 7days and they will install metres and charge me to have them connected again ! I feel bullied and heartbroken .

  • I don't understand why you have been paying the £1100 if you didn't owe it. Once you started paying, that will have been seen by them as acknowledging the debt. Can't Ofgem help?
  • The thing is I received a bill in may 2013 saying I was in credit of nearly £250. which was fine as I would use that for my next bill. but when I received my oct 2013 bill ! its was stating that mays was incorrect and that my bill was actually £1100 . because they had messed up on mine and others accounts .. that's why I am struggling now :(
  • Oh, I see, so you do owe the money, but it's not your fault you got into arrears. In that case I would have a word with Ofgem and see if they can twist Npowers arm into letting you have more time to pay.

    Npower are a mess with their accounts generally at the moment & even when they are not an often unreasonable company.

    Can you actually afford to pay half now? If so do it. If not don't - but do pay what you can reasonably afford.

    The fact they've said 7 days in a letter doesn't necessarily mean they will act or be able to act in 7 days

    If your meters are inside they will need to obtain a warrant to enter & fit a PPM. To get that they will have to go to Court & you will have the opportunity to put your case / objections to the Judge. An offer to pay half on a mess they created is from unreasonable & would not therefore necessarily be looked at unsympathetically by that Judge.

    If they are outside you have more of a problem but in this case I would ignore your call centre numpty & send a written complaint & offer / payment. It would not be unreasonable to expect to pay the debt over the same period it accrued in. This complaint should at worst hold any action on their part whilst they respond to you. Good luck.
