Paying Tesco Mastercard via bank transfer - possible?

Hi, does anyone know if I can pay this card via a bank transfer to a specified account using my own ebanking?

I ask because Tesco have made their website a massive pain to log in to, presumably in the name of making it more secure. When you do log in you can only pay off a balance via debit card which is again a bit of a hassle with the 'verified by Visa' stuff.

I'd much prefer to be able to set the card account up as a 'payee' on my bank's eBanking system and just pay the card that way. That's far easier.

The Tesco system is so annoying that I actually just avoid using that card now whenever possible. It also doesn't help that they have a bizarre set of rules regarding exactly when you should lodge the payment which I've fallen foul of in the past resulting in around £50 of charges even though I was paying the card in full every month ....

Either on the payment slip on your statement or in "how to make a payment" details, there should be a sort code (6 digits, possibly hypenated into 3 groups of 2) and account number (8 digits). You should also quote your credit card account number (16 digits) as the payment reference.

This info will allow you to set up both standing orders and on-line payment mandates.

Personally, I like to "test" a new payment mandate with a small value transaction first, but that might be over-cautious.

Hi, not sure if you can do it like you suggested but you can pay it off in full each month automatically.

I have been dong this for a couple of years and it works really well.

Just phone Tesco and they will send you a form. You still get your statement and it tells you the date payment will be taken, about 10 days later I think.

I'm with you re. Tesco bank website procedures - it drives me mad too. But do like the tesco points !

Thanks - will give that a go and see if the transaction goes through. As you say, something like a tenner at first to test it.

I know it should be possible as I could pay my other credit card that way (though it doesn't matter any more since it's with the same bank as my main account and has been integrated into the eBanking services anyway).

Tesco go out of their way to make using their card as awkward as possible. It's a card I prefer not to use if I can but it's handy to have the facility and sometimes can be used to yield massive clubcard points.

Yeah - after the hassle I had with them over 'late' payments (thanks to their ridiculous narrow window of payment rules) I set up a DD to cover min payment so as to avoid that happening again but I prefer to have control over whether or not to make a full payment in the event that the amount is really large that month and would mess with my current account balance. Actually, setting up that DD involved a lot of time on the phone and faffing around if I recall correctly. They really like to make it awkward for their customers.

It's not often I use the Tesco card anyway as a result of their obstinate attitude - but as you say, the clubcard points are the main draw as you can sometimes get amazing clubcard point bonuses by using the card on certain products.
