Potato salad with tinned potatoes

I want potato salad for tea but only have tinned potatoes (usually only use them for corned beef hash).

Can I use them for potato salad? I find them bland and tasteless until I add salt but don't want salty potato salad.

I suppose what I'm asking is how can I make it taste nice!!!

I make potato salad using mayonnaise, sliced spring onion, black pepper and crushed garlic. The flavours of those four combined tend to cancel out any flavour the potato might have in! I think Pizza Hut use tinned for their potato salad and it's soooo good.

I am trying to lose weight at the moment. Anybody tried to make potato salad with 'lighter than light' mayo? Otherwise I shall just have to wait. Aldi have salad potatoes on the Super 6 atm so would be a great time to do it

I've used Hellmann's extra light mayo before and didn't notice any difference to the normal flavour - I usually mix it with light salad cream too as I don't like just the mayo taste.

Yes it's fine with lighter than light - as Joey Tribbiani says, "it tastes the same and my clothes fit me better!" x

I love them with mint sauce and a dollop of yogurt.

  • I always add yogurt to a mayonnaise dressing, be it coleslaw, tuna, potato salad or whatever-chopped-into-a-bowl salad. Bit of mayo, bit of salad cream and a bit of yog, lightens the whole thing without altering the taste too much.

I suspect the variety of potatoes used for canning are likely to be the ones with a more waxy texture as the floury ones would just disintegrate, and are therefore probably completely suitable for a salad.

I've been considering buying some tinned potatoes for just this purpose so I'd be interested in hearing how they turned out.

Inspired by reading this thread earlier, I made a potato salad using tesco value tinned potatoes, squirt of salad cream, bit of Mayo, black pepper, spring onion and a bit of grain mustard to go with my salad.

And I think it turned out very nice, even if I say so myself.

I only ever use tinned potatoes for potato salad. the texture is much better. I use half mayo to salad cream season well with salt and pepper and sometimes add crispy bacon.
