Have you ever taken a psychometric assessment ?

If so was it a school or for a job, did you learn anything from it?

My OH and I have both done them, at school and for jobs. I didn't see the point of the test and when I asked the OH if the test was any use he replied "I didn't get the job!". They're supposed to show where you have strengths and weaknesses (I think). I did the test when I was working for a temp agency.

I've been thinking about this since I posted my reply and i seem to remember doing lots of them - maybe it was a new technique. I did a few at school probably relating to careers and team building skills and as i said previously when I got a job at a temping agency. I think I also remember doing them when I applied to uni. I love doing that sort of test but they were all pointless.

I spent 2 days doing tests in my old job - just about everyone going. The only thing I learned from it was what I knew already - that I was brighter than my boss!

Done a whole host of them from school, to in job ones for team building days and as part of the job interview process.

To be honest most have just said what I already knew so havent really learned much from it. Did have one just after starting a job that came back with a couple of different sections including one of "how to manage this person" which went to your boss. The very first line of mine was "He only respects authority when it suits his purpose to do so". Probably not the best thing for your new boss to read :D
  • I did some as part of the recruitment process for a job - I didn't learn a lot from the results but I can see how they could be useful to a prospective employer who doesn't know you.

Did one as part of an interview for one of the calatog places in Bradford (probably nearly 20 years ago) - never even heard back from them!

Did one at work a few months ago to try and identify strengths and weaknesses - apparently I don't like dealing with people!

I did one for a job interview around 10years ago.
It described me probably far better than I could have described myself.

It also suggested I was ideal for the specific type of role I was applying for.

I got the job (and enjoyed it very much).

Part of a job interview process

    No.

We weren't treated very well in the interview process (in fact, it was one of the most hostile experiences I've ever been through - really nasty!), and I was pleased not to be offered the job.

I did one for a job once and it said I was 'Slow, unresponsive and suited to a sedentary position'. The HR bloke who did it (he knew me as it was in internal job) laughed and said 'That doesn't describe you at all does it?' It most certainly didn't describe me - I got the job. Just shows what a waste of time they can be!
  • My organisation has just started rolling out something called DISC profiling to all existing staff (rather than if you're applying for a job).

It's really insightful and not at all judgemental - it shows what type of work you're most suited to and gives you ideas on how to relate to other profiles (the aim being people share what they are) and how to get the best out of your working relationships.

It got me fairly accurately (and everyone else, too). Definitely more interesting than a straight psychometric profile that tends to show your 'strengths' and 'weaknesses'. Everyone is better at doing some things than others and you need all types for a successful team :)
