EDF raising my bill at 1st sign of

Options
I'm a little confused over EDF's policy.

For the past year I have always been in credit with the company and submit my readings every month (or 2 months maximum)

However when I submitted my readings the other day I instantly got a message saying I wasn't paying enough and that revised bill would be sent my way increasing my monthly payment.

I have just received my updated bill and my payment has gone up from £104 to £108 a month.

My confusion is that EDF seemingly were very very quick at increasing my payment at the first sign of me not paying enough, yet during all the time when I was in credit they never reduced my monthly payment!

(Currently on the Blue+ Promise Fixed until December 2014)

As an aside I was looking to switch energy providers anyway as I could save around £90 a year if I did, however with this new increase in my bill that saving will obviously be significantly higher. However I am guessing that if I switch EDF will require me to pay the amount I have 'underpaid', which currently is £169 according to them.

I'm a little miffed if I'm honest, our energy usage should have been less this winter due to it being mild (less heating) and our tumble drier being out of action for 3 months.

I still haven't a clue how they work out these energy bills!!

No energy company will let you switch if you owe money.
You should keep your own regular readings to keep a check on what you`re using.
Here a link to a site where you can put in your readings and what tariff you`re on and it`ll work out your bill.

    Thanks.

EDF have based their estimates on my last 3 months usage - ie January to March.

I am sure that over summer usage will go down considerably and I should end up in credit again. Do you think they'll listen to that argument?

Tbh the extra £4 a month is not a huge issue but I just feel it's a bit cheeky of them.

EDF have increased and decreased my DD over the course of the contract.

If you give them a ring, I'm sure they will happily re-instate the original DD amount for you if that is what you prefer.

Perhaps give them more frequent meter readings too.
If your account was in credit all over winter and now you are being asked for a higher DD amount, it sounds like either the winter period statements were based on EDF estimated meter readings and/or the latest statement is based on an estimated reading.

There is no indication that the OP is in debt to the supplier.

The implication is that the OP's account is possibly currently in debit, but that is not the same as being in debt to the supplier.
There is nothing to suggest a request to switch supplier would be refused if the OP were to so request one.

Did you actually read their post?
The OP said they owe £169.

    I stated a fact.
If you owe money to a supplier
    they won`t let you switch.
