Is there a software that does this?

I need a software that can scan a very very large folder, all subfolders for all types of files and be able to provide a report (excel, csv?) of all the full file names with the full path of the directories they sit in..is something like that on the market to try / buy?

The real bonus would be if the software would tell me:
1 - Which files are password protected.
2 - Scan the first few lines of the file and provide the first few lines in a separate column on the output report.

Any help / guidance would be much appreciated.

    can do the main request.

For the others, you'll probably need to write your own app. You'll need to write a separate plugin for every single type of file, and every single type of encryption, that you're interested in.

Can you tell us what you actually want to do, so we can suggest a more realistic solution?

dir /b /s does the first bit.

Knowing what they've been protected with and what they contain is going to be more fun.

Thank you for all the responses.

What I need is an actual excel report which shows lists all of the files in main and all sub directories and tells me which one is password protected and which ones are not.

one part that column should pick up 'keywords' from scanning the non password protected files to try identify what the content of the file may have (as the filename may not be descriptive).

Even if something can just identify the password protection, that would be great.

I did a google search for 'identify password protection' and came up with this

Good find. Looks like you need to pony up the readies in order to save the scan report though.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. What do you want to achieve by doing this?

Other than disk level encryption there's no such thing as password protected.
I can open any file I like in MS notepad - it probably won't be readable, but it will open.
So when you say password protected, what do you mean? Are you talking about MS office only? Zip files? Both? More? Passwords are only relevant to the software opening them, so we'd need to know what software you're interested in opening these files with.

  • If you have excel installed, there are various macro's available that can run and give you most of the details you're after... Not sure about the first few lines of text. Search google for "excel folder tree"
