Temp Car Insurance - advice required

Hello everybody,

I posted a while ago about how my car insurance was cancelled due to a change of address. My provider refused to award my third year of no claims and offered me a refund of £7.00 after all fees were taken into account.

Fortunately, I am in a position where I can lease a car through my employer. This includes my insurance, MOT, tax and maintenance (including tyres) for a very reasonably price. Taking into account issues with my current car, I have decided to go for something newer.

I need my car for work at the moment and it takes roughly around 10-12 weeks for the new car to be built and delivered. Obviously I don't want to buy new insurance as I won't need it on the new car and I'm aware of the ridiculous charges customers are made to pay to cancel/make changes. However, I do need to use my car for the next 10-12 weeks so I am able to get around.

My mother has offered to buy my old car as it's newer than hers. She currently owns a car which she is insured on.

Would it be possible for her to insure herself on my car and add me as a named driver, then for me to cancel myself off when my new car comes? Is there any other way I could insure myself temporarily on my car without having to sign up to a twelve month agreement?

I have looked into temporary insurance but it's very expensive. I may as well just buy a years insurance for what it will cost me for the duration I require.

Any advice appreciated :)

Ok, so your mother buys your car, transfers her policy to it leaving her old car uninsured. Adds you as a named driver, you use that car still, what car does your mother use?

She can have two cars covered by the same policy on a temporary basis but like temp cover theres normally a max of 28 days per time and an admin fee each time she adds it back on. It may be worth exploring as an option but may not end up being much cheaper than temp cover.

Of cause if she is disposing of her car straight away and will live without a vehicle herself for 3 months then it may work but you need to declare the main driver etc correctly.

If you are flexible on what options you want on the car I am surprised it will take that long to get it to you. Replacing my car last year for a relatively rare one there was a fair number of options available pre-reg already in the UK with a lead time of a week, a similar number pre-reg at the factory with a lead time of a fortnight. Only a build to order had a 3 month lead

    Yes.

She can insure the car with you on, but it would have to be you as the named main driver.

Then when you get your new car she can change over the main driver and either keep or remove you as the named driver, (it may be cheaper for her to have you as a named driver even if you never drive it again)

And if I then removed myself after 10 weeks (when my car comes), I'm assuming my mums premium wouldn't drop massively to reflect this?

Basically I'm not wanting to pay 12 months insurance for something I'll be driving for a couple of months.

    Thanks for your advice :)

Adding additional drivers typically reduce the premium unless that other driver is very high risk. By removing you there would be an admin fee to pay and potentially the loss of a discount by having a named driver.

Ultimately get them to quote the effect of removing you and decide then. Of cause if you are left on you need to keep her and thus them informed of any claims or convictions you get

You can get an idea of what difference having you on the policy makes to the premium by your Mum doing dummy quotes now online.

Do 3 quotes, one with her as the sole driver, then with you as a named driver, then with you as the named main driver (which you will be when you drive it whilst awaiting your new car)

That will give you an idea of what difference (if any) removing you will make.

(Even if you remain a named driver they may charge an admin fee and a premium alteration when she becomes the main driver)
