Is it possible that the socks slid down the envelope on the way to the PO? If this happened it could well have been too thick for LL and the counter clerk would be right to send it as SP.

Unfortunately I think the woman in the PO took advantage of the person who helped me. Kind of disgusting but oh well, I've learned a lesson,

I really doubt she set out to "take advantage" of anyone. Chances are she is just a bit useless.

There is a woman who works in my local PO who is exactly the same, she wasn't aware of the new small parcel sizes, and tried to charge me £6 odd instead of £3.70 a few months ago. She was insistent that she was right until I proved her otherwise by showing her the PO site on my smartphone.

If I have something that I know is large letter I tell the PO clerk to check it. Otherwise they seem to try and charge everything as small parcel by default.

Next time make sure the person you are sending is aware that it should be large letter and only cost £1.24, if they try and charge more they need to ask the PO staff to re-check the sizing and confirm. Same as any other store, if you aren't happy with the service complain straight away!

I have been told more than once by a dim Post office clerk that an item is not a large letter but a packet because - and I quote here - the postman will have to push it through the letter box.

Anyone got any bright ideas as to how else post gets through the letter box?

I gave up using padded envelopes or jiffy bags as I found once you put even a smallish item inside, they ended up being just a bit too thick to qualify for large letter rate.

I ended up investing in a postage size template & now double check everything, rewrapping if necessary to ensure the item qualifies for the lowest postage rate possible. Also I wrap tightly in cling film where possible to remove as much air as I can to stop items having to go at a higher postage cost.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Thanks for the advice everyone, people are really helpful on here :)

I'm going to invest in a postage size template too I think, I imagine it'll save a lot of headaches. Any advice on where I can find one? I found a thread on google that said Royal Mail provide a free one but the Royal Mail link is dead.

Nice to know Im not the only one with postage problems! The idiot woman in my local PO told me that if I wrote my postcode and house number on the back of the parcels that they wouldn't be sent as 'the machines would only read that and they will be sent back to you' she was adamant until I pointed out to her that my OH works in the mail centre where the parcels go and there was no machine. She was still adamant until I told her that my OH sorts the parcels himself and there is definitely no machine! She snatched it off me in a huff and did something very naughty - the delivery office is out the back of the PO and she gave it straight to the postwoman to deliver back to me  OH checked it and he said it definitely hadn't been out of the delivery office - it certainly hadn't been through the mail centre. I raised holy hell and got her in a lot of trouble - she refuses to serve me now! Theres a lovely young lass works there usually serves me - she sells on EBay herself so she knows the drill. The little quirks of the PO staff drive OH up the wall :D

You can't get the free one from Royal Mail anymore. Have a look on Ebay. I got a perspex one on there & if I remember correctly it was less than £4 & p&p free.

It's a really handy bit of kit, which I use in conjunction with my digital kitchen scales, & has paid for itself over & over & now when I go to the post office, they tend to take my word for how much the item will cost to send seeing as I've been spot on with the cost of sending my packages since buying the template.

Wow, people are really taking advantage on eBay. Someone's charging £50 for a template!
