Very old PPI, help needed!

Options
I think I may be flogging a dead horse but... I was bemoaning the fact that I was missold PPI on a mortgage 19 years ago (but had no paperwork for it)to a friend the other day. A man walking behind me apologised for listening to my conversation but said he had had a similar problem but had found a company that had found proof for him just by having his postcode and had been paid out £5000. He couldn't remember the name of the company, however.

I was a serving police officer at the time I took out the mortgage and I remember saying to the woman at the building society that I did not need PPI. She told me that I had to have it as it was a condition of the mortgage offer.

I don't want to use a claims company but if it is the only way I may get compensation then I am prepared to do that. Can anyone help?

Is contacting the building society concerned somehow out of the question?

I have tried. The building society was the Staffordshire which was taken over a few years after I took out the mortgage. The Nationwide said they cannot help without a reference number/paperwork.

I did think the man was going to give me his business card with 'reclaim ppi' as a headline.

You could send them a Subject Access Request (SAR) which costs £10. If no records are returned then you'll have to accept that your complaint is over.
No Claims Company can do more than this and they have no special way of getting the information that is not available to yourself.

ROFL. Thats a new one. The insurance policies are not in the public domain. So, there is no way to know what insurance you had. However, they could find out lender by looking at your land registry record which is in the public domain. That gets you the lender name but not the account number and not the insurer or the insurance type.

Most mortgage insurances were standalone direct debits. This is part of the reason most mortgage insurance complaints fail (the other being its covering your mortgage. not some tinpot insignificant debt). you could check old bank statements.

Was that PPI or life assurance? A lot of people get them mixed up. Life assurance was frequently required as a condition of borrowing right up to the late 90s.

It was PPI, I already had a life assurance policy through the police force.

I think I need to accept defeat!:(
