Stuck with prepayment meter after moving house

Hi all I am in need of some serious advice. Me and my OH have just bought our first house. Upon moving in we found out that both gas and electric are paid for by a EDF prepayment meters - which as we all know is very expensive.
I called EDF, who said they would remove the meter, but that it could take until the end of May, and that in the meantime I would have to become a customer of theirs. This I was not very happy with but as Im using their energy it makes sense to me. They said that my current supplier could also remove the meter.
Then I called my existing supplier - First Utilities to switch the account to my new property and to get them to remove the meter. They told me that it will take up to 6 weeks to remove the meters. This seams like a very very long time to do.
I am in the position of having to use an energy supplier that I don't want to use, and that is more expensive than I want to pay, my supplier of choice will take ages to remove the meter. Does anyone have any advice on how I can get this sorted quicker?

EDF became your supplier the day you moved into the house (well, the moment you started consuming energy actually, but I'll assume for this purpose that they are one and the same). This is called a deemed contract, and exists whenever anybody moves into a property.
You're lucky - EDF are one of the few that will replace PPMs for free.
I can't believe it came as a surprise to you - for me when I buy a property (admittedly thats only happened once), I make note of the metering situation of utilities, amongst other things.
The short answer is no, there is no quicker way. And whilst DD tariffs are cheaper, PPMs charge no more than standard tariff paying when the bill arrives. If you're being ripped off, it's no more so than the majority of the population (62%) who have never switched at all!
It must appear like I'm trying to be contrary for the sake of it, and that's not my intention, but I'm stunned anybody would opt for FU at all!0
