Mixed experience at Halfords (Castle Boulevard) in Nottingham.
Good: Online booking for MOT worked well.
MOT was carried out at the allotted time and was ready for collection when I returned.
Reception staff were polite and helpful.
Bad: Shame that they had scratched one of the doors and fouled the interior trim, gear stick and handbrake lever with oily dirt.
Got an "amber" warning about a brake disc. It was correct - the dics is indeed quite poor. The trouble is that they wanted about double the going rate to replace it.
Reception staff implore each customer to leave them excellent reviews. Sadly they do little to earn them here.
It was the cheapest MOT in the area but caring for your vehicle and keeping it clean are simple basics.0 -
It's quite simple really, follow the money, as the saying goes.
I'll come back to Halfords.
Look at the P4U fiasco. They'd got their money, loaded the company with loans and didn't seem to care what happened afterwards.
There's an advert on telly at the moment about a floating hotel in Folkestone (SAGA). My inlaws used to use them religiously each year and then stopped. I asked why and they said it wasn't the same as it used to be since it was bought out. I think it's been bought at twice.
Back to Halfords and I used to work for a car manufacturer. Daewoo were so impressed by the reputation that Halfords had with the public, that they actually considered selling the vehicles through them. In the end, they settled on the service & warranty contract.
Then in 2002 CVC Capital Partners bought them and floated on the Stock Exchange 2004. In 2010 they bought Nationwide Auto MOT from Phoenix, I'm sure you'll remember Phoenix group or look them up.
That's what happens to private companies with a good company ethos, they get bought out, raided for money and the carcass left to die.0
