Just looking at this, it seems that for both our cars the Toyota (AA) and VW (RAC) policies would work out cheaper than an equivalent level of cover by going direct or am I missing something?

Consider taking out joint membership of the ADAC which is a proper motor-club for the benefit of members rather than the organizations we have in the UK which are money-making businesses which are run for the benefit of shareholders.
Cost is €107 for two people - any car, anywhere in the world.
Free phone calls, everyone speaks English, you get the nearest breakdown services wherever you are, AA or RAC or whoever, - even in USA, Canada, or Australia.
It's like the AA and RAC used to be, long ago when they really cared about members.

I speak German so that would be alright, however:Using the links below to acquire ADAC membership requires that your place of residence is in Germany0 -
I have the same for my skoda, the cover appears broadly similar, and it's the RAC who actually come out anyway.
The only downside that I've spotted is that the cover is with the car so if you sell it or it dies completely you can't pause the cover and transfer it elsewhere as you can with the AA/RAC, you'd lose the remaining bit of the term. I took the 2 year cover out which was cheaper again, as I'm not planning to change cars any time soon. Obviously if something does happen I'll lose out but I decided it was worth the small chance of something major going wrong. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

Ah - you missed the bit that says phone them to join if you are outside Deutschland. (A free number) And they will phone you back if you ask.
They are in the process of upgrading the on-line registration and actually apologize for that.
I believe it's our UK postcodes that throw the system.0
