Hi
I need help on IP based CCTV systems. I’m looking to do this on a budget really, as it’s not a complete necessity (the area I live doesn’t suffer crime but I thought I’d future proof the house having recently renovated it). Plus I have cat cables dangling out of my walls!
The current setup I have is:
2 x cat cables outside (one at the front of house, one at the back) for outdoor cameras
1 x cat cable in garage for indoor camera
I have a 10/100 switch though it is not POE, connected to internet.
A DLInk 320L NAS (with a spare disc drive slot available)
There is no power going to any of the camera locations, only the Cat cables (mostly 6, but some 5e)
What I want from the system:
I think that’s it unless I’m missing another consideration?
What I need?
I know I need a POE switch/injectors, which I will buy and plug into my existing switch, or have 2 lans running (one purely for CCTV)
Would this work ok with my existing switch?
I’m unsure which cameras would suit me best. Again I’m looking at on a budget, and appreciate I might not get every bit of functionality I want. Could someone please advise?
What else extra would I need?
I’m not running server software and would rather I didn't need to. I'd just like to record to the NAS, but login using my PC/MAC/ipad/iphone to view or gather alerts etc.
Please help. I'd ideally like a kit which I can just buy.

What I want from the system:
- Dome cameras which can be wall mounted.
- Record onto my NAS drive (DNS 320L) or should I buy another one?
- Able to work on motion detection.
- Work in the dark / infrared
- Accessible from iphone / ipad / pc / apple computer.
- Probably ‘manoeuvrable’ so they can be setup but then left in position.
- Colour picture and clear.
I think that’s it unless I’m missing another consideration?

You need some form of remote logging,,, after all what if someone was to break in and steal\trash the NAS0

store to a cloud device?
I'm looking at kits on ebay - way cheaper than buying all separate though they all come with a NVR and usually 4 cameras, where I only really need 3. That would power everything too. Just not sure if I'd just prefer going to my nas? and more so what the quality is like!
Way too complex all this CCTV stuff. Too many choices and variables."The future needs a big kiss"0 -
I did some experimenting with Zoneminder, which worked pretty well, though at the time I was only using a single camera. It's a linux based product, free though.
Probably doesn't fall into your last requirement though.0
