wallet in windows phone,what's it for?

new phone here. the wallet thing. it says you can put library cards and loyalty card details into it, but then how can you use them?you need to scan them at the point of use don't you?
was hoping I could empty the old purse a bit.

    I don't have a Windows phone so I haven't seen what you describe, but I would suspect that it will display the bar code from these cards on its screen and you then scan that at the checkout instead of the card. I did it on my Android phone with the Easyjet "check-in by phone" service.

    it must be me being dense.
    I filled in the name/account number etc, but that's all.where would the barcode come from? wondering if there is another part of the app i'm supposed to access.

    As a feature of win phone it was not well implemented. The new 8.1 update should improve things though. My wallet app contains my paypal and Mastercard details which it auto downloaded from my Microsoft billing details. In theory you can then use this to pay for apps or services on your phone. Your phone should also have NFC which means in theory you can use proximity payment methods, though I have not tried this myself.
